Job description
About the Grounds Team
The grounds team at Sunderland AFC is responsible for keeping the pitch and surrounding areas in excellent condition throughout the year. Their work ensures the surface is safe, visually impressive, and ready for matches and events. With close attention to quality, detail, and safety, they help maintain the character of the club’s home ground and deliver a strong experience for players, staff, and supporters.
The Opportunity
As Head Stadium Groundsperson, you will lead the grounds team in maintaining a Premier League-standard pitch. The role involves planning and delivering turf care work such as aeration, feeding, and irrigation, along with renovation and ongoing surface preparation. You will oversee grounds machinery and equipment to keep operations safe and efficient, while working closely with matchday operations before, during, and after fixtures to ensure the pitch performs and presents at its best.
The position also includes responsibility for health and safety practices, budget control, purchasing, and working with pitch consultants and outside specialists. A key part of the role is driving continuous improvement, keeping up with new developments in grounds care, and supporting other club locations including the Academy of Light and Eppleton Grounds.
What We Ask For
The club is looking for someone with an NVQ Level 2 in Horticulture, Sports Turf, or a similar qualification, plus experience in a stadium setting. Strong practical knowledge of PA spraying and a full, clean driving licence are essential. You should be able to communicate clearly, follow instructions accurately, and share information effectively with others.
The right candidate will be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, showing initiative, self-motivation, and a calm approach under pressure. Good organisation, the ability to prioritise, and confidence in handling several tasks at once are important. A positive outlook and proactive mindset are expected. Experience leading others, working on Championship or Premier League pitches, and holding further qualifications such as NVQ Level 3 Sports Turf or PA1/PA2/PA6A spraying certifications would be an advantage. Ongoing learning, attendance at training, and keeping up to date with best practice are also part of the role.
Additional Requirements
You will need to obtain an Enhanced DBS through SAFC.
