Job description

About the team

SumUp is expanding its tax function, and this position will be central to defining what comes next. The role reports to the Global Head of Tax and is responsible for driving tax strategy execution across a large international structure of more than 40 entities worldwide, with particular emphasis on Europe.

This is a senior, high-influence role for someone with strong technical tax knowledge, sound judgement, commercial understanding, and a practical, delivery-focused style. You will serve as a key partner to the Global Head of Tax, helping turn high-level strategy into actionable outcomes across the broader tax organization.

What you will do

  • Direct the implementation of SumUp’s tax strategy across corporate tax, transfer pricing, indirect tax, withholding tax, and new or developing tax frameworks.
  • Convert strategic tax priorities into workable plans that can be delivered by the business and the wider tax team.
  • Partner closely on structuring decisions, mergers and acquisitions, market entry, financing arrangements, legal entity reorganizations, and new product launches.
  • Own and improve the group transfer pricing model, coordinating with internal teams and external specialists to move from design to execution.
  • Contribute to major cross-border tax matters such as Pillar Two, CbCR, public CbCR, and related regulatory changes.
  • Strengthen tax governance, controls, documentation, and decision frameworks to reinforce compliance, transparency, and future readiness.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop the Tax Strategy team while working closely with Tax Compliance and Tax Operations.
  • Share responsibility for controversy and dispute matters, including interaction with tax authorities, auditors, and outside advisers.
  • Develop trusted working relationships with Finance, Legal, Compliance, Treasury, FP&A, Regulatory Reporting, and broader business teams.

What we are looking for

  • Progressive tax experience in multinational organizations, ideally gained through a mix of in-house and advisory roles.
  • Strong technical command of corporate tax and transfer pricing, plus solid exposure to cross-border structuring and M&A.
  • Practical understanding of Pillar Two / GloBE, CbCR, and public CbCR, along with the curiosity and judgement needed to navigate evolving tax topics.
  • Demonstrated success in leading tax teams, including people management, prioritization, and performance development.
  • A hands-on approach, with the flexibility to move between strategic planning and detailed execution.
  • Experience handling tax audits and disputes, including direct communication with tax authorities.
  • Strong literacy in accounting and financial statements, preferably backed by a finance- or accounting-oriented background.
  • Excellent communication ability, with a talent for explaining complex tax issues to senior stakeholders outside tax.
  • Capability to manage external advisers effectively, including quality, scope, and cost.
  • A strategic, practical, and commercially minded outlook, with confidence in ambiguity and the ability to challenge ideas constructively while bringing order to complexity.

Why join SumUp

  • Be part of a global fintech operating at meaningful scale and complexity, with the chance to help shape the future of tax at SumUp.
  • Work on important topics such as corporate tax, transfer pricing, structuring, disputes, governance, and international growth.
  • Act as a genuine business partner and help influence how tax supports product, commercial, and strategic decisions.
  • Join a collaborative and inclusive workplace where different perspectives are encouraged and respected.
  • Gain access to ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.
