Role overview

Lethbridge School Division is looking for a full-time Head Caretaker for Ecole Agnes Davidson in Lethbridge, Alberta. This role oversees the full caretaking operation at the school site and includes all regular caretaker duties, with a strong focus on maintaining a clean, safe, and well-kept facility.

As the lead caretaker, you will act as the on-site coordinator for caretaking activities and will need to work well with students, coworkers, school administration, and other division staff so that day-to-day needs are handled effectively. The position calls for solid knowledge of cleaning practices and preventive maintenance, along with the ability to carry out all tasks to a high standard.

The work can involve physically demanding duties and may require you to support other caretaking staff. While the primary schedule is day shift under the Principal's supervision, evening shift work may also be required. You are also expected to take an active role in daily, weekly, monthly, and annual cleaning routines.

Location and schedule

Site: Ecole Agnes Davidson

Vacancy: 1 position

Hours: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week

Start: Immediately

Shift pattern: Day shift is the main schedule, but evening work may be required. Staff may need to rotate between day and evening shifts to meet school needs. Rotation shifts for Head Caretaker and caretaking staff are required during the school year from September to June.

Rotation requirements: Secondary schools: 6 weeks, equal to 240 hours per year. Elementary schools: 4 weeks, equal to 160 hours per year.

Assignment note: You may be moved to another location if division needs change.

Ecole Agnes Davidson is a French immersion school serving Kindergarten to Grade 5 students. It was established in 1962 and supports more than 500 students from across Lethbridge. The school emphasizes a French learning community where students are encouraged to build confidence, take risks, and persevere.

Key duties

  • Manage the overall caretaking operation for the school site.
  • Carry out all assigned caretaker duties, including maintaining a clean school environment.
  • Lead caretaking staff and coordinate work so school needs are addressed promptly.
  • Apply strong cleaning and preventive maintenance knowledge in daily operations.
  • Participate in daily, weekly, monthly, and annual cleaning tasks.
  • Perform all work to a consistently high standard of quality.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 or an equivalent credential.
  • Proven supervisory and leadership ability.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a facility management environment.
  • Strong public relations skills and the ability to maintain positive working relationships with the public, students, coworkers, staff, administration, and division representatives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain records and complete required division forms and paperwork; computer literacy would be an advantage.
  • Strong organizational skills and the flexibility to adjust daily routines as needed for day and evening shifts.
  • Ability to stand or walk for long periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 22 kg independently and 22 to 31.5 kg with assistance.
  • Capacity to work in a highly active physical environment.
  • Ability to work safely with a variety of chemicals.
  • Physical ability to perform heavy manual labour for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid ABSA 5th Class Power Engineering Certificate or an equivalent qualification is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in a school setting as a Head Caretaker or Assistant Head Caretaker is an asset.
  • Experience with plant maintenance, cleaning methods and procedures, heating and ventilation systems, building security, and minor repairs is an asset.

Employment conditions

  • Successful candidates who are new to Lethbridge School Division must provide a police information check with Vulnerable Sector Check from police services or an RCMP detachment, with no charges or convictions.
  • A satisfactory Intervention Record Check from South Region Alberta Child and Family Services is required.
  • Proof of photo identification in the employee's current legal name must be provided. Acceptable documents include a valid driver's licence, provincial identification card from a licensed government registry office, valid passport, or Nexus card. If unavailable, a new card must be obtained and proof of application must be submitted within two days of hire.
  • Valid Social Insurance Number documentation in the employee's current legal name must be provided. If it cannot be produced, the successful candidate must obtain a new one within two days of hire.

Compensation

Current hourly pay is $29.06. From September 1, 2026, the hourly rate will increase to $29.93.
