Job description
Role summary
This position is focused on keeping commercial buildings, industrial systems, outdoor areas, and maintenance equipment running smoothly across assigned facilities. The role supports fault finding, diagnostics, housekeeping, and repair work to maintain safe and efficient operations.
What you will do
- Help diagnose issues and complete repairs across building services such as HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, kitchen equipment, roofs, drains, walls, and related assets.
- Assist with fitting, adjusting, and maintaining building systems and operational equipment.
- Complete day-to-day repair and finishing tasks, including ceiling tile replacement, door hardware repairs, wall patching, and painting surfaces and equipment.
- Move small amounts of office furniture and equipment between site locations when needed.
- Investigate maintenance faults, assess how systems are performing, and suggest improvements or cost-saving ideas where appropriate.
- Use tools and maintenance equipment safely and properly while carrying out facility and grounds work.
- Respond quickly and courteously to emergencies, breakdowns, and service requests.
- Inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment on a regular basis to spot hazards, preventative maintenance needs, and equipment defects.
- Carry out general carpentry and site upkeep duties as required.
- Follow all relevant codes, regulations, government requirements, company policies, workplace safety rules, and safe work methods.
- Use maintenance technology effectively, including smartphones, tablets, computers, web applications, and building automation systems.
- Complete annual safety training and stay involved in ongoing compliance activities.
- Maintain a neat, professional appearance and follow uniform and grooming standards while on site.
Requirements
- A current NV1 security clearance is preferred.
- Baseline clearance may also be acceptable.
- Prior experience in facilities maintenance, building services, or a similar hands-on maintenance role is desirable.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capability.
- Ability to work on your own, prioritise multiple tasks, and stay effective in a busy environment.
- A strong focus on safety, professionalism, and quality workmanship.
- At least 2 years of experience in a commercial property or facilities maintenance setting.
- Technical, vocational, or practical training in areas such as HVAC, electrical, mechanical systems, plumbing, carpentry, or painting.
- A current driver’s licence with a good driving record.
- Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Outlook and Word.
- Willingness to work shifts, be on call, work overtime, and respond to emergencies when required.
- A trade qualification is highly desirable.
- NV1 or Baseline security clearance is required.
Work environment
The role covers office, operational, and facility settings and requires a proactive, adaptable approach. The successful candidate will work across multiple sites in the ACT and must be comfortable travelling between locations as needed.
The job involves safe use of maintenance tools, equipment, and technology, as well as professional communication with clients, contractors, and internal teams. It also requires physical capability to perform practical maintenance tasks, move around sites, and respond quickly to operational needs in a fast-moving environment.
