Role overview
This role is centered on delivering professional grooming services for dogs and cats, applying the correct grooming methods, styles, and handling techniques to keep pets safe and looking their best.
What you will do
- Provide a high level of customer care and service throughout every interaction.
- Represent the company’s mission and values in day-to-day work.
- Maintain dependable attendance and follow the assigned schedule.
- Be available for varying shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and overtime based on business demand.
- Answer calls, set grooming appointments, and greet pets and their owners on arrival.
- Help drive repeat and new business through outbound calls, appointment reminders, follow-ups, and vaccination verification.
- Complete the required 7-point check-in process accurately.
- Follow bathing and grooming procedures exactly as required.
- Clean ears, trim nails, and carry out other grooming services as needed.
- Follow the customer’s requested clipping pattern and grooming preferences.
- Use clippers, combs, and shears to trim and shape coats.
- Keep pets calm using appropriate non-physical handling methods and verbal reassurance.
- Complete all customer and company paperwork fully and accurately.
- Monitor animals for signs of stress throughout the appointment.
- Keep grooming, bathing, and check-in areas clean, sanitized, and orderly.
- Maintain grooming tools and equipment to help prevent injury and reduce the spread of disease.
- Support other store operations whenever needed.
- Report any accident or injury to the Store Manager right away.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of hands-on experience grooming or styling pets.
- Comfort working with both dogs and cats.
- Ability to provide your own grooming tools, or willingness to purchase the required tools such as clippers, blades, and shears.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of Paragon Level 1 and Level 2 training provided by the company.
- Ability to read, write, and count accurately.
- Strong familiarity with grooming equipment, including tubs, brushes, combs, shears, scissors, clippers, dryers, and bathing products.
- Clear communication skills for working with customers.
- Compassionate approach when handling animals.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation habits.
- Ability to lift and carry pets typically weighing 0 to 50 pounds.
- Availability for variable schedules, including nights and weekends.
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
- Comfort working around animals and pet waste.
- Ability to move, handle, and care for live animals safely.
- Ability to complete all required training and certifications.
Working conditions
The job is performed indoors in a generally favorable environment with moderate noise. You may frequently encounter wet conditions during bathing, and there will be regular exposure to animals of different sizes, breeds, and temperaments, as well as sharp grooming tools, scented shampoos, soaps, and pet waste. Shift lengths vary by store and are usually at least 4 hours, with some shifts extending beyond 8 hours. The work setting includes hard indoor and outdoor surfaces such as concrete and asphalt, with adequate lighting and temperature.
Physical demands
- Move and transfer live animals, equipment, and merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Use grooming tools such as shears and dryers effectively.
- Operate store equipment, including a computer, cash register, and related tools.
- Lift and carry pets up to 75 pounds, with assisted lifting for pets over 100 pounds.
- Push and pull merchandise up to 2,000 pounds using proper material-handling equipment.
- Work while walking, standing, and remaining in one position for a full shift.
- Move frequently around the salon to groom, bathe, clean, and maintain the area.
- Access all areas of the store, including the sales floor, stock area, register area, and bathing salon.
- Occasionally reach overhead.
- Frequently bend, twist, kneel, crouch, stoop, and squat as needed for grooming and cleaning tasks.
- Handle and work in close contact with live animals.
