About The Role
The New York Times seeks a seasoned engineer to join its Graphics department, contributing to the development of cutting-edge interactive applications and tools that enhance visual storytelling. You will collaborate with a diverse team to design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure supporting large-scale multimedia journalism projects, including live election results and data-intensive reports.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and sustain software solutions that enable graphics developers to create and publish visual journalism.
- Enhance and optimize data pipelines for ingesting and displaying extensive datasets such as nationwide election outcomes and statistical analyses.
- Support and mentor other developers contributing to foundational software libraries.
- Manage automated cloud-based tools for frequent content publication, data gathering, and analysis.
- Rapidly prototype interactive multimedia applications and graphical elements to meet editorial needs.
- Ensure all projects meet web accessibility and performance standards.
- Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team under tight news deadlines.
- Uphold and support the organization's commitment to independent, truthful journalism.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum of five years experience in creating interactive graphic content and web-based platforms.
- Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern web frameworks such as Svelte.
- Experience developing tooling and systems for seamless creation and publishing of interactive content.
- Strong skills in managing applications within complex cloud computing environments.
- Preferred experience working under rapid news production timelines and adapting to evolving requirements.
- Interest in news and storytelling innovation, with a background in interface and information graphic design.
Additional Information
This position is primarily office-based in New York City, with a typical schedule of four days onsite weekly and some remote flexibility. Candidates must provide portfolios or code samples demonstrating interactive web projects, along with cover letters explaining their specific roles and technologies utilized.
The role reports directly to the Director of Interactive Platforms and is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary ranges from $113,270 to $155,000 USD. Eligible employees may also receive bonuses, stock options, and comprehensive benefits including healthcare, retirement contributions, paid leave, and professional development support.
