About the role
VIA Rail is investing in major upgrades to its trains and infrastructure, contributing to a more modern and sustainable transportation network across Canada. In this role, you will support the safety, reliability, and presentation of the national passenger rail fleet.
This opportunity is well suited to someone with prior experience in hotel housekeeping, janitorial services, or building maintenance.
What you will do
- Carry out cleaning work on the inside and outside of passenger rail cars.
- Vacuum, shampoo or wash carpets, and clean tables and seating surfaces.
- Sanitize washrooms, showers, kitchen areas, and windows.
- Drain and replenish potable water tanks.
- Drain wastewater holding tanks.
- Perform work outdoors in changing weather conditions.
What the employer is looking for
- A high school diploma is required.
- A valid driver’s licence is mandatory.
- Previous experience in housekeeping, commercial cleaning, or building maintenance is expected.
- Availability for rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.
- You must be physically able to lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
- Mechanical aptitude is considered an advantage.
- A strong commitment to quality, efficiency, and results is important.
Schedule and location
This is a permanent position with a 40-hour workweek. The schedule changes as needed and may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Work will be based at the Vancouver Maintenance Center or the Mission Maintenance Centre.
Pay and benefits
- Base pay is $34.36 per hour.
- Evening shifts include a premium of $1.50 per hour.
- Night shifts include a premium of $2.00 per hour.
- Medical and dental coverage are included, along with a pension plan.
- A travel pass becomes available after one year of service.
- Uniforms and safety equipment are supplied, including boots, safety glasses, a helmet, and gloves.
- Free parking, locker rooms, showers, and cafeteria access are provided.
- Employees receive 5 personal days and up to 10 sick days.
