About Stem Health

Stem Health is revolutionizing primary care by offering a physician-led, membership-based healthcare experience focused on meaningful patient relationships. Scheduled to open its flagship clinic in First Canadian Place in September 2026, the company integrates medical excellence with hospitality in a thoughtfully designed environment. Their care approach is relationship-centered, enhanced by data, emphasizing time, trust, and exceptional service.

Position Overview

As a Full Stack Developer, you will be integral to shaping every touchpoint a member or clinician encounters in Stem Health's platform—from appointment scheduling and health result delivery to care coordination and clinic operations. Technology here is fundamental, not supportive. You will own the end-to-end development of products powering the member-facing applications, internal clinical tools, third-party integrations, and operational systems, collaborating closely with AI engineers, product managers, clinicians, and operational staff to deliver performant and reliable software.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive full-stack features across key product areas including member portals, onboarding experiences, scheduling, care coordination tools, health dashboards, and internal clinical and operational interfaces.
  • Assume full technical accountability for features from conception through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing iteration.
  • Collaborate with product and design teams translating user needs into high-quality, accessible software using JavaScript, HTML, and Ruby on Rails aligned with established design systems and engineering best practices.
  • Construct and maintain integrations with external systems such as EHR/EMR platforms, diagnostic labs, scheduling, payments, communications, insurance, and benefits APIs.
  • Design and implement secure, well-documented RESTful and GraphQL APIs scalable for production environments.
  • Own and optimize data design involving schemas, migrations, and query performance ensuring secure and accurate data flow.
  • Build webhook consumers, event-driven workflows, and background job pipelines to maintain system responsiveness and operational stability.
  • Manage cloud infrastructure, including deployment pipelines, environment configurations, monitoring, alerting, and incident responses across staging and production setups.
  • Implement and sustain CI/CD pipelines that enable rapid and secure deployments with automated testing and rollback mechanisms.
  • Ensure healthcare-grade performance, availability, security, and compliance with regulations such as PHIPA.
  • Proactively manage infrastructure resources and costs to support scalable growth as Stem Health expands.
  • Collaborate on integrating AI-powered capabilities including LLM-based interfaces, search enhancements, workflow automation, and decision-support systems, ensuring their reliability and observability.
  • Maintain high code quality through clean, well-tested, and well-documented code, fostering a culture of code review and refactoring.
  • Set and uphold engineering standards regarding coding, testing, deployment, and documentation to avoid technical debt.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers and interns, elevating team engineering capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Over 5 years of full-stack web development experience delivering production-quality applications.
  • Expertise in Ruby on Rails encompassing MVC, ActiveRecord, RESTful routing, background jobs, and scalable application practices.
  • Strong proficiency with JavaScript (ES6+), familiarity with frameworks or libraries such as Stimulus, Hotwire/Turbo, or React, and mastery of semantic HTML5.
  • Advanced experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL), including schema design, migrations, and query optimization.
  • Skilled with cloud infrastructure services on AWS, GCP, or Azure, including compute, storage, networking, managed services, and identity/access management.
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code methodologies.
  • Competent in building and integrating RESTful and GraphQL APIs and managing complex third-party system integrations.
  • Knowledge of AI/ML integration patterns, including LLM APIs, vector databases, embeddings, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architectures is a notable advantage.
  • Background in healthcare or regulated data environments, with understanding of PHIPA, HIPAA, or similar privacy/security standards highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with EHR/EMR systems, clinical workflows, and health data standards such as HL7 and FHIR is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of clearly articulating technical reasoning and collaborating effectively with non-technical stakeholders.
  • A user and product-focused mindset emphasizing outcomes over mere implementation.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a highly responsible engineer who embraces ownership of features, systems, and shared codebases. They act decisively with incomplete information, rigorously safeguard core qualities, and pragmatically accept flexible aspects. They comprehend the heightened responsibilities of software development in healthcare contexts, prioritizing security, privacy, reliability, and correctness. This role suits those eager to create impactful, well-engineered healthcare technology.

Why Join Stem Health

  • Be a foundational engineer at an early-stage, physician-led healthcare company with a flagship clinic opening in 2026, directly influencing technical architecture and engineering culture.
  • Enjoy high ownership and impact with architectural decisions shaping the company's scale and user experiences.
  • Contribute visibly within a compact, formative team, where individual input is valued and has real consequences.
  • Work at the intersection of healthcare, artificial intelligence, and product engineering building technology that affects clinical outcomes and human lives.
  • Receive competitive compensation, meaningful equity, and grow professionally as a senior engineer in an ambitious startup.
