Role overview
An innovative biotechnology business focused on next-generation biomarker discovery and precision health is looking for a fractional Chief Operating Officer to help guide growth and tighten execution. The position works alongside senior leadership to create scalable operating systems, advance company-wide initiatives, and support expansion across the U.S. life sciences sector.
Compensation
The engagement is paid at $185 per hour.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the CEO and leadership group to shape and carry out growth plans.
- Design and improve operating processes across scientific, business, and administrative areas.
- Lead cross-functional workstreams that improve efficiency and support scale.
- Contribute to budgeting, financial planning, resource planning, and operational projections.
- Create, track, and review KPIs and other operating metrics.
- Support fundraising efforts, investor updates, and strategic partnership discussions.
- Coordinate with outside stakeholders such as research partners, vendors, consultants, and business collaborators.
- Oversee project management activities so goals, deliverables, and timelines stay aligned.
- Assess and put in place the systems, policies, and infrastructure needed for expansion.
- Offer operational leadership and guidance on organizational development and best practices.
Requirements
- Background as a COO, VP of Operations, General Manager, or in a comparable executive role.
- Experience in biotechnology, life sciences, healthcare technology, diagnostics, or a related field is strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to help early-stage or growth-stage organizations move forward.
- Solid understanding of operations, strategic planning, budgeting, and organizational design.
- Experience engaging with investors, boards, and external strategic partners.
- Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder-management abilities.
- Comfort working in both strategic and hands-on modes in a fast-moving environment.
- MBA, advanced scientific degree, or equivalent practical experience is preferred.
- Additional preferred background includes commercialization of biotech, diagnostics, or healthcare innovation platforms.
- Familiarity with research partnerships, technology alliances, and regulated healthcare settings is preferred.
- Experience scaling startup operations and building core organizational infrastructure is an advantage.
Work arrangement
This is a part-time fractional contract role based in Cambridge, MA, with a hybrid setup.
