Job overview
This role is responsible for keeping the store clean, safe, and sanitary across floor areas and restrooms. The position helps strengthen customer trust and loyalty by maintaining consistent store standards and supporting an inclusive workplace that respects different backgrounds and experiences.
Core duties
- Maintain cleanliness and safety in the sales floor, liquor store, offices, break rooms, back rooms, training rooms, and about 70% of restroom areas.
- Use floor-care equipment, department tools, and cleaning chemicals correctly and safely.
- Sweep or vacuum mats and rugs, return them to their proper place, remove carpet stains, empty trash, and complete deep restroom cleaning.
- Create a welcoming shopping environment by helping customers feel valued and supported.
- Deliver day-to-day conditions that align with the company’s standards for sanitary and well-kept stores.
- Assist customers by helping them locate products or suggesting items when appropriate.
- Follow company expectations for food safety, sanitation, productivity, and overall safe work practices.
- Comply with regulatory requirements related to food safety, USDA rules, Country of Origin Labeling (COOL), and Department of Agriculture requirements.
- Carry out product recalls and withdrawals quickly and ensure affected items are secured and removed from customer access.
- Support safety programs by following procedures, identifying hazards, and escalating unsafe conditions to store management.
- Report customer or employee accidents, safety concerns, and illegal activity such as robbery, theft, or fraud.
- Follow wage-and-hour policies and help build a strong safety culture in the store.
- Ensure associates are working safely and have completed required safety training.
- Make sure hazard assessments are available for reference and that personal protective equipment is provided and used as needed.
- Keep equipment in proper working order and assist with correcting safety hazards, including lockout/tagout procedures when required.
- Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and requirements
Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED. The position requires English, while Spanish is preferred. Experience in a similar setting is expected at 0 to 3 years, and there is no supervisory requirement. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, have authorization to work in the United States or the ability to obtain it, and successfully complete pre-employment drug screening and a background check. Strong customer service ability, along with excellent interpersonal, motivational, and communication skills, is also needed.
Work environment and physical demands
This is a retail role with heavy physical demands. Work involves standing or walking on different floor types, using both hands and feet for repetitive tasks, and frequently reaching, carrying, pushing, or lifting loads up to required weights. Occasional activities include sitting, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing up to 30 feet.
The role may involve indoor and outdoor work, including cold, freezing, heated, and wet or humid conditions. Safety risks can include slippery or cluttered floors, twisting of the back or neck, exposure to sharp objects, hazardous equipment, loud noise, skin irritants, dust, fumes, sprays, hazardous cleaning solutions, and other toxins.
Common equipment used includes cleaning supplies and tools, office equipment, a register, pricing gun, scales, scanner, and material-handling equipment such as racks, carts, pallet jacks, and shopping carts. Preferred equipment includes a baler/compactor and box cutter. Required protective equipment includes goggles, gloves, and a back brace. Pulling capacity requirement is 250 lbs, and lifting requirement is 50 lbs.
Schedule and travel
The shift pattern is varied. Travel is occasional, and overnight travel is not required.
