Job description

Role Overview

The Fire Assay Laboratory Technician will work in the Minerals Laboratory in South Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and report to the Production Manager. The role focuses on fire assay testing, sample preparation, precious-metal recovery, documentation, and maintaining strict quality, safety, and laboratory standards.

Qualification and Experience

Candidates should have a background in Chemistry, Science, or Geochemistry. A Bachelor’s degree or diploma is required, along with at least 3 years of experience in a testing laboratory or a similar environment.

Technical Knowledge

  • Hands-on familiarity with laboratory testing methods
  • Working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 requirements
  • Understanding of relevant national and international testing standards
  • Ability to use laboratory instruments and equipment effectively
  • Awareness of laboratory health and safety practices

Core Duties

  • Weigh samples and metal materials with accuracy.
  • Combine samples with litharge inside extraction cupboards.
  • Charge crucibles with prepared samples and carry out furnace melting.
  • Transfer molten material into moulds in a controlled manner.
  • Move materials safely using a hand-operated pump truck.
  • Keep the furnace and assay work areas clean, orderly, and safe.
  • Carry out cupellation to isolate precious metals.
  • Clean, prepare, and weigh lead buttons.
  • Prepare flux blends using litharge, borax, soda ash, and silica.
  • Operate and regulate muffle furnace temperatures.
  • Collect and polish precious-metal beads.
  • Weigh gold and silver beads using microbalances.
  • Compute precious-metal content from bead and sample weights.
  • Run blanks, duplicates, and standards as part of quality control.
  • Track samples from receipt through to final reporting.

Health, Safety, Security, and Environment Responsibilities

  • Support the company’s safety initiatives within the team.
  • Follow all legal requirements and the company’s HSE policies, procedures, and practices at all times.
  • Keep work areas neat, free from hazards, and report any deviation, fault, or risk immediately to the relevant manager or HSE representative.
  • Escalate newly identified hazards without delay and help develop controls to reduce or remove the risk.
  • Report HSE incidents immediately and cooperate fully in any investigation.
  • Act whenever an unsafe act or unsafe condition is observed.
  • Protect your own safety and the safety of others who may be affected by your actions or inaction.
  • Work cooperatively on health and safety matters and do not interfere with or misuse safety, welfare, or protection equipment.
