Job description
Role overview
This role sits within the R&D Finance function and supports the Trust’s research and development directorate as well as hosted research networks. The analyst will help produce accurate management information, including R&D budgets, monthly income and expenditure reporting, and financial forecasts.
Working closely with the Senior Financial Analyst and the R&D Finance Manager, the post holder will review budget reports, examine where actual results differ from plan, and help ensure corrective action is taken where needed. The role also involves supplying financial analysis and guidance to Research Leads so they can understand and use their finance reports effectively.
The Finance Department is located in Great Dover Street, and the role requires work across several sites and buildings, with attendance at external meetings when necessary. The working arrangement is hybrid, with 2 days in the office and 3 days working from home.
Key responsibilities
- Produce and keep up to date R&D budget reports and other spreadsheet-based reports in line with agreed deadlines, departmental procedures, and policies.
- Check budget reports, investigate major variances by reviewing the finance ledger sub-systems, and summarise findings in spreadsheet and other formats for the Research Finance Manager and wider finance team.
- Prepare costing spreadsheets to support budget development and financial planning.
- Meet regularly with budget holders, provide them with financial information and analysis, and handle finance-related queries with limited supervision.
- Help ensure information moves effectively between researchers and other Finance teams.
- Support the preparation of external service agreements and internal recharge agreements linked to new R&D initiatives, including the Comprehensive Research Network.
- Explain relevant Trust Standing Financial Instructions to staff when needed.
- Suggest improvements to local processes and ways of working.
- Follow the Data Protection Act and maintain the confidentiality of personal and patient information.
- Carry out other duties that are appropriate to the grade and nature of the post.
Skills and knowledge
The role calls for strong spreadsheet capability, the ability to work through finance ledger sub-systems, and a solid understanding of basic accounting principles. Effective reporting, analysis, and communication skills are also important, along with the confidence to work with budget holders and explain financial information clearly.
Team context
The R&D Finance team forms part of the Financial Income and Planning team and provides both operational and strategic financial support to the Trust’s R&D Directorate and hosted research networks.
