Job description

Company Overview

Suhrab Group Pty Ltd is a Sydney-based construction firm specializing in commercial fit-outs, joinery, refurbishment, and building trade packages across New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. Their projects involve up to AUD $1.5 million budgets and cover healthcare, retail refurbishments, heritage works, amenities upgrades, joinery, painting, electrical, and plumbing tasks. The company frequently tenders via Australian platforms and collaborates directly with head contractors and builders. They are expanding their remote estimation team to support a growing tender pipeline.

Position Summary

The Estimator role involves preparing precise and professionally formatted Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and pricing schedules. This entails interpreting architectural drawings, specifications, and tender documents for active Australian construction tenders. Each BOQ must accurately present item descriptions, units of measurement, quantities, unit rates, and total prices using the company’s Excel template, ready for builder submission. The job is deadline-sensitive, with tenders typically closing within 5 to 14 days, requiring timely and accurate delivery.

Core Duties

  • Perform quantity take-offs from architectural, structural, and services drawings (PDF/CAD), ensuring correct referencing and measurement practices.
  • Construct detailed BOQs in Excel separated by trade categories like joinery, carpentry, painting, etc., including item details, quantities, unit rates, and pricing with ex-GST subtotals and GST summaries.
  • Apply supply-and-install pricing based on established rate libraries and highlight items needing supplier quotations or clarifications.
  • Complete and return builder pricing schedules and trade package breakdowns in specified formats.
  • Review tender documents including scopes of work, specifications, schedules, and addenda, identifying inclusions, exclusions, and any qualifications.
  • When necessary, develop basic Gantt-style construction schedules in Excel for tender submissions.
  • Deliver professionally formatted documents with proper orientation, headers, footers, and print-ready layouts.
  • Monitor tender deadlines and deliver drafts early (2–3 working days before submission) for review and adjustments.
  • Update BOQs and pricing swiftly in response to revised drawings, addenda, or negotiations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (B.E./B.Tech) or diploma/degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • At least 2 to 3 years of direct experience in quantity surveying, estimation, or BOQ formulation for building construction, preferably in fit-outs or commercial interiors.
  • Proven skills in performing precise quantity take-offs from 2D plans and schedules.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities including complex formulas, summary links, and polished formatting; practical proficiency will be tested.
  • Strong understanding of standard measurement units in construction trades and their proper applications.
  • Clear, professional written English suitable for BOQ descriptions and communications.
  • Reliable home office setup with a stable high-speed internet connection and capacity to manage large drawing files.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience with measurement standards from Australia, the UK, or Gulf countries such as UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
  • Familiarity with trades related to fit-outs and joinery including cabinetry, doors and frames, wall linings, sanitary fixtures, painting, and finishes.
  • Exposure to take-off software like Bluebeam Revu, PlanSwift, CostX, or AutoCAD is a plus but not required.
  • Experience interacting with head contractors’ pricing schedules and subcontractor tender packages.
  • Basic knowledge of construction scheduling tools, including Gantt charts, MS Project, or Excel-driven timelines.

Selection and Compensation

Candidates will undergo CV screening, a paid trial task involving sample BOQ preparation, and a video interview. Compensation includes a competitive retainer or per-BOQ rate based on expertise and productivity, with opportunities for long-term engagement and career growth into senior estimation roles.

Additional Information

The role requires flexible working hours with overlapping timezones for coordination with Australian Eastern Time (AEST/AEDT). The company welcomes candidates from India and other regions to apply and supports full-time or part-time contractual engagements.
