Team and Role Overview

This position is within the Asia Strategies department focused on expanding premier investment management in Asia by developing sophisticated investment strategies and macroeconomic research solutions.

The role is tailored for a Data Engineer embedded in the systematic China equity team, responsible for constructing and maintaining data infrastructures and pipelines that underpin cutting-edge systematic investment research and trading. This job involves deep integration with investment processes, demanding ownership of data lifecycle management from data acquisition to delivery into live production systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate and integrate new datasets to enhance investment models, ensuring quality and long-term value.
• Manage complete data lifecycle of key investment datasets including ingestion, modeling, upkeep, and documentation adapting to evolving research requirements.
• Build and maintain scalable data models, ontologies, and schemas accurately representing investment concepts for consistent use.
• Create and sustain robust data pipelines supporting systematic China equity research and production workflows.
• Collaborate closely with researchers, developers, and engineering teams to translate research needs into dependable data assets.
• Analyze datasets to understand characteristics impacting research such as data distribution, gaps, and stability over time.
• Implement data quality checks, anomaly detection, and monitoring to guarantee accuracy and completeness of production datasets.
• Engage with data providers and stakeholders to resolve quality issues and improve data utility.
• Maintain relationships with data vendors and stay current on market offerings through ongoing research and engagement.
• Contribute to tooling and standards improvements that expedite research and enhance data ecosystems.

Minimum Qualifications

• Between 1 to 5 years of experience as a Data Engineer or a related role, preferably embedded in systematic investment teams or high-scale data technology environments.
• Proficient in Python and SQL with experience designing and maintaining maintainable production data pipelines.
• Fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
• Experience with modern data platforms such as Snowflake or comparable cloud data warehouses.
• Knowledge of distributed processing and workflow orchestration tools like Spark or Airflow.
• Ability to ensure data correctness, lineage, versioning, and reproducibility in critical downstream environments.
• Competence in basic statistical analysis and data science to evaluate data quality and research applicability.
• Experience handling complex, evolving datasets including financial market data or extensive transactional/event data with quality challenges.
• Understanding of the Chinese equity market, including its structure and major data sources like Wind.
• Familiarity with jurisdiction- and country-specific data challenges within China’s macro and corporate realms.

Work Environment and Other Details

The position requires working onsite in New York City approximately four days per week.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role is an annual base between $150,000 and $200,000, supplemented by a discretionary bonus. Bridgewater offers a competitive benefits package, which may be subject to change consistent with applicable regulations.
