Role overview

This full-time Environmentalist I position is based in the Environmental Services department at 11906 Navicent Health Medical Center in Macon, GA. The schedule is 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm, with 40 hours worked each week. The role is benefit-eligible and reports directly to the cleanliness and service standards required for assigned patient and public areas.

Working under direct supervision, the Environmentalist I is responsible for maintaining approved cleanliness levels throughout assigned spaces by following department procedures, schedules, chemicals, germicides, and equipment standards.

Key duties

  • Create a strong first impression in the assigned patient unit or area by performing detail cleaning tasks such as dusting high surfaces, spot mopping corridors, cleaning baseboards and handrails, polishing stainless steel, and escalating maintenance or facilities issues to supervision.
  • Perform daily cleaning of patient rooms, including changing trash liners, dusting and damp mopping floors, cleaning restrooms, wiping furniture, and disinfecting surfaces.
  • Turn over discharged patient rooms promptly by fully cleaning and disinfecting the space, making the bed, sanitizing bathroom fixtures, restocking supplies, and confirming required room materials are present.
  • Respond quickly to beds that become available in clinical areas and use bed tracking tools to help prepare the room for the next patient.
  • Restock supplies in patient units and public areas as needed while using materials carefully and responsibly.
  • Complete morning cleaning tasks in clinical areas, including common spaces such as restrooms, elevator lobbies, nurses’ stations, and break rooms, and vacuum carpeted areas routinely.
  • Follow the infection control team’s safety procedures when cleaning isolation rooms.
  • Clean ancillary spaces such as trash rooms, dirty utility areas, medication rooms, supply closets, and offices according to department expectations.
  • Attend daily shift huddles, bi-monthly supervisory meetings, and monthly department meetings to stay aligned on updates and hospital direction.
  • Report unsafe conditions, broken items, and flooring issues to the appropriate supervisor or facilities team.
  • Provide courteous, professional service to patients, visitors, and staff while maintaining satisfaction standards.
  • Be prepared to reassignment within the hospital or health system based on operational needs and supervisory direction.

Requirements

  • No prior work experience is required.
  • No formal education is required.
  • No license, registration, or certification is needed for this role.
  • Must be able to work safely in busy, noisy, and sometimes unpleasant environments.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in person and by phone or radio.
  • Must be capable of bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching overhead and forward, and moving quickly between positions.
  • Must be able to support co-workers with transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using proper body mechanics.
  • Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 lbs., depending on job class evaluation.
  • Must be able to maintain grip strength of 60-80 pounds and meet the stated physical evaluation standards for the job class.
  • Must be able to stay calm under pressure, manage several tasks at once, prioritize work, and keep the workspace organized and efficient.
  • May be required to pass a cardiac recovery test if the role is classified under POPE C.
  • Must be willing to follow department procedures, hospital standards, and supervisor direction.
