About the Role
This opportunity is with Mercor, a company that matches highly skilled creative and technical professionals with leading AI research organizations. The business is based in San Francisco and is backed by investors such as Benchmark, General Catalyst, Peter Thiel, Adam D'Angelo, Larry Summers, and Jack Dorsey.
You will join as an Environmental Science Expert in a remote contract role focused on building realistic work environments and benchmark tasks for AI research.
What You’ll Do
- Create a realistic digital workspace based on the Drive folders you rely on in your daily work, including items such as site assessment reports, permit applications, monitoring summaries, and similar materials.
- Model tools and systems such as Esri ArcGIS, SAS, MATLAB, and Socrata within the task environment.
- Develop multi-step assignments that reflect genuine workflows and involve moving across several applications, files, and stakeholders to test advanced AI agents.
- Partner with fellow environmental science specialists to shape the environment, define task boundaries, and evaluate whether scenarios are realistic and rigorous.
- Work with research teams in an asynchronous format to improve task design and the criteria used to assess environmental-science benchmarks.
- Help advance frontier AI research by contributing work that influences how AI systems are trained and evaluated.
Experience and Qualifications
- You should have at least 3 years of full-time experience in a federal or state environmental agency, a large environmental consulting firm, an F500 sustainability team, or an R1 university.
- A solid background is expected in environmental assessment and compliance, permitting and monitoring, site investigation and remediation, or sustainability reporting.
- Daily hands-on use of Esri ArcGIS, Google Maps Platform, SAS, MATLAB, and Socrata is required.
- Strong analytical reasoning and clear writing ability are important.
- A master’s degree or PhD in environmental science, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
Compensation and Terms
The pay is task-based, with compensation of approximately $1,150 to $1,450 for each completed task depending on quality.
High performers may also receive a weekly bonus incentive.
Top contributors may later be moved to an hourly pay arrangement.
Application Steps
The application flow is designed to take about 20 to 30 minutes and includes uploading a resume, completing an AI interview based on that resume, and submitting the form.
