Job description
About the role
Toast builds digital tools that help restaurants and local businesses run better, grow revenue, connect with guests, and support their teams. In this position, you will lead a compact, high-impact engineering group focused on internationalization and translation across the R&D organization. The work centers on making it easier for many product teams to deliver experiences in multiple languages with consistency, safety, and scale.
You will shape the company’s internationalization approach, improve translation workflows, and drive adoption of practices that support multilingual product development across a broad engineering landscape. This role calls for a leader who blends platform thinking, customer empathy, operational rigor, and the ability to influence across teams.
What the team does
The team partners with a wide set of engineering groups to simplify internationalization and translation across hundreds of repositories and systems. You will help create practical standards, intuitive tooling, and dependable operational processes that make multilingual product delivery more repeatable and efficient.
Responsibilities
- Set the technical direction and execution plan for Toast’s internationalization and translation platform, with the goal of improving the product experience for users in multiple languages.
- Own the technical and operational strategy for product translation at scale across R&D, spanning hundreds of repositories and connected systems.
- Apply an AI-first mindset to reduce manual work, streamline translation operations, speed up issue handling, and increase team leverage.
- Define, promote, and evolve best practices for internationalization, including locale-aware development, translation readiness, quality, testing, release processes, and long-term maintainability.
- Create effective operating rhythms, metrics, and monitoring that help teams follow i18n standards, measure translation quality and adoption, spot issues early, and resolve them quickly.
- Mentor and develop engineers, supporting both technical growth and leadership development.
- Work successfully in a fast-changing environment where experimentation and iteration must coexist with platform reliability.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of experience managing strong engineering teams, ideally on platform teams or teams serving internal developers as primary users.
- Hands-on understanding of modern web architecture, including component libraries, build systems, CI/CD, and developer tooling.
- A structured, process-oriented leadership style with experience building metrics, monitoring, feedback loops, and other mechanisms that improve outcomes over time.
- Proven ability to work with product partners and deliver measurable business results.
- Capability to turn broad strategic goals into concrete technical roadmaps and execution plans.
- Strong communication and leadership skills, including experience influencing senior technical and product stakeholders.
- History of coaching engineers and helping build inclusive teams with a strong sense of ownership.
Nice to have
- Experience with internationalization, localization, translation, or developer tooling.
