About the Role

Toronto Hydro is looking to hire up to five Engineers specializing in electrical distribution standards and quality compliance to ensure the reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the utility's Electrical Distribution Power System. Roles include Engineer (Standards - Underground), Engineer (Standards - Overhead), and Engineer (Standards - Quality & Compliance). Candidates will contribute to developing standards, specifications, quality assurance programs, and provide technical support to optimize system operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain technical specifications and standards for electrical distribution equipment, reviewing supplier, contractor, and consultant proposals for compliance and technical merit.
  • Evaluate new technologies and compare alternatives considering cost-benefit analysis, safety, and customer needs to recommend optimal solutions.
  • Approve equipment and materials for use based on technical data and quality assessments.
  • Create and update standard practice documents and technical training materials, promoting adoption of standards across design and construction phases.
  • Perform engineering analyses, testing, evaluations, and prepare comprehensive reports and studies.
  • Provide technical consultation, manage projects efficiently, and present business proposals and plans.
  • Represent Toronto Hydro in external meetings and committees, potentially leading teams or projects.
  • Develop and uphold quality assurance processes; conduct root cause analyses on equipment failures and service issues to recommend corrective actions.
  • Facilitate communication among internal and external stakeholders to resolve quality and compliance issues.
  • Maintain quality databases and respond to audit findings to improve compliance activities.
  • Engage in special investigations, support senior management on assignments, and participate in business initiative committees.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario is required.
  • At least 5 years of engineering experience, preferably within utilities or manufacturing sectors.
  • Valid Class "G" driver's license is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with electrical distribution equipment design, utility standards for underground and overhead systems, and grid automation including SCADA/DMS and protection systems.
  • Proficiency in engineering software such as CYME, computer-aided design, data analysis, and general office applications.
  • Strong project management, problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills, capable of independent work and team collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability in root cause analysis, quality management systems, and facilitating technical discussions with stakeholders.

Work Arrangement and Other Information

The position operates in a hybrid model with remote work allowed two days per week, specifically onsite Tuesday through Thursday. Applicants must reside in Ontario within reasonable commuting distance to the office.
