Role overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. is hiring a safety-focused Employee In Charge (EIC) for work in the railroad environment in Hope Hull, Alabama. This position plays a key role in protecting crews and ensuring that all activity on or near the right-of-way is carried out safely.
The EIC provides on-track safety support for freight railroads, transit systems, state transportation departments, and other rail-industry partners. The role involves active field work around live tracks and requires regular coordination with train dispatchers and crews.
What you'll do
- Set up and manage on-track protection measures, including derails, track signs, and related safety equipment.
- Coordinate activities at the worksite to keep operations organized and safe.
- Maintain radio communication with dispatchers and train crews regarding worksite safety conditions.
- Lead mandatory job briefings that are clear, concise, and complete before crew members enter the track area.
- Prepare daily field reports and document any observed rule or policy violations.
- Apply railroad, state, and federal safety rules consistently.
What we're looking for
- Comfort using tablets, smartphones, and other communication tools to help manage train-movement coordination.
- Strong speaking and writing ability.
- Good attention to detail and solid organizational habits.
- Ability to travel extensively, sometimes for months at a time.
- A valid driver's license.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 2 years of experience with a railroad employer, preferably in maintenance of way.
- Willingness and ability to complete required federal, client, and company training successfully.
Work setting
This is a field-based role performed alongside active railroad tracks. Travel is expected to account for roughly 50% to 85% of the time.

Pay ranges from $25 to $37 per hour depending on experience.
