Overview
Arc Infrastructure develops and manages transport infrastructure assets that help support economic growth and job creation across Western Australia. Its rail network spans 5,500 km and connects the Midwest, Goldfields, Yilgarn, South West and Great Southern regions. The organisation is looking for an Ecology Specialist to join its Environment and Heritage Team at Perth Airport on a fixed-term full-time basis.
Role purpose
Reporting to the Environment and Heritage Programs Lead, this position provides specialist ecological leadership across assessments, approvals and compliance activities that support infrastructure operations. The role is central to helping projects satisfy internal and regulatory requirements, while also reducing environmental risk and improving ecological outcomes across the business.
What you will do
- Lead flora and fauna assessments using the appropriate technical standards and guidance.
- Produce and check detailed ecological reports that support approvals and project delivery.
- Advise internal teams working on maintenance and capital works activities.
- Coordinate ecological inputs to permitting work and manage environmental approval processes.
- Support compliance with Commonwealth and State environmental laws, as well as approval conditions.
- Maintain ecological information sets, including GIS records for species, communities and offsets.
- Carry out field assurance checks and contribute to investigations into environmental incidents.
- Work with regulators, handle submissions and reporting, and support ongoing engagement.
- Help build environmental capability by training and guiding colleagues across the organisation.
What you need
- A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Ecology, Botany, Zoology or a closely related field.
- Substantial experience in terrestrial ecology, ideally gained in infrastructure, resources or linear asset environments, with a preference for 7-10+ years covering both botanical and zoological work.
- Strong hands-on experience delivering flora and fauna surveys and ecological assessments.
- Proven ability to prepare and review technical documentation for environmental approvals.
- Good working knowledge of environmental legislation such as the EPBC Act and WA Clearing Regulations.
- Experience managing approvals processes, including clearing permits and fauna/flora authorities.
- Confidence in dealing with regulators and maintaining productive stakeholder relationships.
- Experience coordinating consultants and assessing technical deliverables.
- Practical GIS capability, with ArcGIS preferred, and solid ecological data management skills.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability and communication skills.
- Leadership capability with a track record of mentoring others and shaping environmental outcomes.
- A continuous improvement approach, along with strong attention to detail and good organisational skills.
