Drainage Maintenance Officer

About the Role

Hume City Council, one of Australia's most rapidly expanding and culturally varied councils, seeks a dedicated Drainage Maintenance Officer to join its Assets team located in Coolaroo, Victoria. This permanent full-time role focuses on maintaining and enhancing the drainage infrastructure to ensure efficient function and adherence to local legal requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect drainage systems to diagnose and understand drainage problems accurately.
• Coordinate cleaning services and CCTV inspections as necessary to resolve drainage issues.
• Communicate with residents and relevant agencies when drainage maintenance involves private properties or other entities.
• Gather and verify details about required maintenance work, prioritize tasks, and issue instructions to contracted service providers.
• Oversee contractors to guarantee timely and safe repair of damaged pit lids in compliance with the Council’s Road Management Plan.
• Ensure contractors adhere strictly to Council policies, standards, and legislative mandates while working within Hume City Council jurisdiction.
• Compile comprehensive reports detailing maintenance activities, system status, and proposals for enhancements.
• Collaborate across departments to effectively manage drainage projects and repairs.
• Maintain compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
• Engage in continuous training and development to stay updated with industry best practices.
• Contribute to the planning and execution of preventative maintenance programs for drainage systems.

Desired Skills and Experience

• Ability to discern customer or client requirements and respond appropriately with well-informed decisions.
• Experience in making sound technical judgments from multiple options to promptly address issues beneficial to the Council.
• Familiarity with road and drainage construction and maintenance standards.
• Understanding of the Road Management Act 2004.
• Knowledge of clerical and administrative procedures and standards.
• Hands-on experience in drainage system construction and maintenance tasks.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Capability to manage challenging customer interactions while maintaining a positive image for the Council.
• Skill in preparing routine correspondence and detailed reports.
• Awareness of local environmental laws and water management practices.
• Acquainted with Coolaroo’s specific drainage infrastructure and local climatic considerations.
• Meticulous and efficient organizational skills.
• Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Willingness to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends when needed.

Qualifications and Certifications

• Post-secondary qualification in municipal maintenance or equivalent professional experience within a Local Government setting or similar environment.
• Hold a valid Heavy Rigid (HR) driver's licence.
