Job description
Overview
The Department of Transport and Planning is seeking a Director, Commercial and Performance to lead commercial, performance, data, and quality assurance activities connected to Victoria’s Road Maintenance Contracts. This executive-level fixed-term appointment is based in Melbourne CBD and runs for up to 5 years.
The department works to create vibrant places and well-connected communities across Victoria through transport, planning, and land services. It promotes a workplace that is safe, inclusive, and high performing, and encourages applications from people with diverse backgrounds.
Role summary
In this role, you will provide senior leadership and oversight across planning, delivery, resource use, and performance outcomes. You will work closely with Maintenance Operations leaders to help ensure contract delivery meets safety, accessibility, and legal obligations under the Road Management Act 2004, as well as relevant strategies and plans.
You will also help shape departmental priorities and budget processes, while building productive partnerships with government, industry, and community stakeholders. A key part of the role is supporting an inclusive team culture, strengthening capability, and driving continuous improvement.
Key selection criteria
- Use analytical thinking and structured problem-solving to address complex challenges, assess wider government implications, and develop practical long-term solutions.
- Create and sustain effective stakeholder partnerships by understanding different perspectives, influencing constructively, and working toward shared goals.
- Show strong political and organisational judgement by balancing priorities and making decisions that align with values, governance, and legal responsibilities.
- Lead in a positive and inclusive way by motivating teams, building capability, encouraging collaboration, and promoting high performance and ongoing improvement.
- Apply transport, planning, commercial, data, and business insight to lift outcomes, manage risk, and deliver community value.
Qualifications and experience
- A current driver licence with no restrictions that would prevent you from meeting the inherent requirements of the role is mandatory.
- You should have relevant qualifications and experience in project management within large and complex organisations.
- Experience in the roads and transport sector, including an understanding of operational environments, is desirable.
Pre-employment and conditions
Appointment is subject to relevant pre-employment screening and reference checks. Applicants must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit or visa appropriate for the role. If you have previously received a voluntary departure package from the Victorian Public Service, re-employment restrictions may apply.
How to apply
Applications must be lodged through the online recruitment portal. You may need to create an account to submit your application. Please provide both a resume and a cover letter explaining how your experience meets each of the key selection criteria. Email or manual applications cannot be accepted.
The closing time for applications is 11:59 pm on Thursday, 9 July 2026.
