Role overview

Wythe County Public Schools is hiring a full-time Custodian for Scott Memorial Middle School in Wytheville, Virginia. This position is for an onsite school custodial team member responsible for keeping the campus clean, safe, and operational.

Preferred qualifications

  • You should be at least 21 years old, in good physical condition, and able to handle moderate to heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds as often as needed.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • It helps to have familiarity with building cleaning methods, supplies, and equipment, or a clear willingness to learn during the probationary period and beyond.
  • You must be able to understand and carry out simple verbal and written instructions.
  • The job requires the ability to climb ladders, stand for long periods, push and pull objects, walk, reach overhead and horizontally, and operate custodial tools and equipment while working around environmental conditions, hazards, cleaning chemicals, and furnace or boiler by-products.
  • Knowledge of HVAC and electrical systems is expected.
  • You should be able to use cleaning products and equipment in an efficient and cost-conscious way during the probationary period and afterward.

Performance responsibilities

  • Clean assigned areas by sweeping, vacuuming, buffing, stripping, waxing, and dust mopping.
  • Collect trash regularly and as needed from rooms and buildings, then place it into containers and dumpsters.
  • Clean restrooms thoroughly, including mirrors, sinks, basins, and commodes.
  • Restock tissue, towel, and soap dispensers and disinfect areas when required.
  • Dust furniture, walls, window sills, and other wood surfaces.
  • Arrange cafeteria chairs and tables when needed.
  • Wash windows, walls, and woodwork, and dust venetian blinds.
  • Keep drinking fountains clean.
  • Maintain school grounds as needed.
  • Mow lawns, trim shrubs, and cultivate flowers using hand and power tools.
  • Help remove snow and ice, including operating a tractor when necessary.
  • Prepare rooms and spaces for special events.
  • Move furniture, equipment, and supplies as required.
  • Handle basic repairs such as painting, minor plumbing, and fixes for desks, chairs, and lockers; also replace ceiling tiles and light bulbs.
  • Clean storage rooms and equipment, and receive, unload, order, and store supplies and deliveries from vehicles.
  • Check freezers and coolers to confirm they are working properly.
  • Secure the school building and grounds to reduce the risk of vandalism and theft.
  • Attend in-service training to build and improve skills in building service work.
  • Inspect boilers and circulation pumps when applicable.
  • Check exit lights, fire extinguishers, and pull stations.
  • Work with HVAC and electrical systems.
  • Complete other related duties assigned by the school principal.
