Job description
Position summary
This full-time custodial role is based in Bowmanville, Ontario, and will initially operate out of St. Elizabeth CES until Northglen opens. The assignment is for 20 hours per week over 12 months per year. While the role is currently an afternoon shift, with flexibility after 4:00 PM at St. Elizabeth, the afternoon schedule will continue once Northglen opens, although the exact hours have not yet been finalized.
Role purpose
The position is responsible for keeping the school building, grounds, and equipment clean, safe, secure, and in working order. The custodian will also carry out minor maintenance tasks related to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Key duties
- Prepare the school for opening and closing, confirm that electrical and mechanical systems are operating properly, and secure the building with alarms set.
- Carry out cleaning tasks such as sweeping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, polishing, buffing, vacuuming, spot cleaning, dusting ledges and furniture, cleaning boards, washing windows and walls, and keeping staff room appliances clean.
- Sanitize washrooms, sinks, drinking fountains, and door handles, and restock consumable supplies.
- Collect and sort waste for disposal, including pencil shavings, garbage, and recycling.
- Clear snow and debris from entrances and walkways, and apply sand or salt when needed.
- Inspect buildings, playgrounds, equipment, fences, roof drains, and other areas for hazards, and maintain playground equipment logs.
- Keep grounds neat by removing litter, cutting grass, trimming shrubs, and weeding beds.
- Perform basic maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, including lubricating motors, repairing furnishings, servicing cleaning equipment, clearing roof debris, replacing bulbs or fuses, and resetting timers.
- Report urgent maintenance issues such as broken windows and problems with mechanical, electrical, or plumbing systems.
- Move, set up, assemble, and adjust furniture and equipment; receive and handle deliveries of furniture and school supplies; and help distribute and store supplies.
- Maintain custodial supply inventory and keep Safety Data Sheets up to date.
- Complete and submit required logs, including water flushing, salting or sanding, playground inspections, and fire safety checks, and assist with fire drills.
- Supervise and review the work of summer student helpers when applicable.
- Provide guidance and training to supply custodial staff when needed.
- Stay familiar with essential building services and the location of valves, panels, dampers, and related systems; operate energy management, fire, alarm, and security systems.
- Carry out security checks, heating checks, and water testing when requested or required.
- Support community use of schools and permit groups as needed.
- Handle other related duties as assigned.
Working conditions
The role includes afternoon work and may involve after-hours flexibility. Duties may require outdoor work in varying weather, use of cleaning chemicals, operation of custodial equipment, and occasional physical tasks such as lifting, moving, and setting up furniture or supplies.
Selection notes
If an internal employee from another classification applies, that candidate must attend an interview and will also undergo reference checks to confirm eligibility under Article 12.02 of the collective agreement. The selection process will be weighted at 70% for the interview and 30% for reference checks.
