Role Summary

This is a full-time, on-site Curtain Machinist position in Napier. The role focuses on producing custom curtains, drapes, and related soft furnishings from work orders and design instructions. You will measure, cut, sew, and finish fabrics with accuracy while working with industrial sewing equipment and other workshop tools. The job also includes checking measurements, carrying out quality checks, making repairs or adjustments where needed, and supporting the sales and design team. In addition, you will help keep the workspace clean and safe and assist with tracking fabric and material stock.

Key Duties

  • Take accurate measurements and prepare fabric pieces for custom curtain and drape production.
  • Cut, sew, hem, line, and finish window furnishings according to specifications.
  • Operate industrial sewing machines and related equipment safely and effectively.
  • Attach headings, tapes, and other required components to finished products.
  • Match patterns carefully and maintain correct fabric alignment throughout the process.
  • Inspect completed items for quality, accuracy, and overall finish.
  • Carry out alterations, corrections, or minor repairs when required.
  • Work closely with the sales and design team to meet customer requirements.
  • Maintain a neat, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Assist with managing fabric, trims, and other materials inventory.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Confidence with sewing and machining, including hands-on use of industrial sewing machines and basic machine upkeep.
  • Strong ability to measure, cut, and manage patterns accurately.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to consistent quality.
  • Working knowledge of curtain styles, headings, linings, and fabric varieties, or a willingness to learn these on the job.
  • Good planning and time-management skills to handle multiple jobs and meet deadlines.
  • Clear communication and a cooperative approach in a small team setting.
  • Physical capability to stand for long periods, handle fabric rolls, and complete manual tasks safely.
  • Experience in curtain making, upholstery, garment machining, or another textile-related trade is an advantage, though not essential.
