Coordinator I, Permit to Work Mechanical Isolator

Overview

This position involves overseeing and coordinating the Permit to Work (PTW) procedures specifically related to mechanical isolation tasks. The main objective is to ensure the secure management of high-risk operations involving mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and process systems by controlling permits, isolations, and verifying compliance with established safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the activation, suspension, and closure of PTW for all mechanical work following standard PTW procedures.
• Confirm that all mechanical isolation documentation—including certificates, isolation lists, spading/blinding records, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) tags—are complete and valid prior to permit approval.
• Coordinate closely with Mechanical Isolation Authorities to guarantee safe performance and accurate documentation of isolations and de-isolations.
• Ensure appropriate usage of mechanical LOTO devices such as blinds, spades, spool removals, valve locks, and tags according to LOTO procedures.
• Supervise simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) involving mechanical systems, identifying and addressing conflicts between isolation activities, pressure systems, stored energy hazards, and other critical operations.
• Maintain precise records of mechanical isolations, long-term isolations, and related certificates within the PTW Control Room.
• Perform regular field inspections to verify consistency between physical isolation points, tagging, PTW postings, and approved documentation.
• Communicate with Performing Authorities and Issuing Authorities to synchronize safe mechanical work execution, placing permits on hold if safety conditions are unmet, with escalation as necessary through PTW governance channels.
• Participate in daily PTW coordination meetings to provide updates on mechanical isolation status, potential conflicts, and operational challenges.
• Adhere to organizational working hour policies, balancing time between field duties and PTW Control Room responsibilities, and assist with additional health and safety tasks as assigned by supervisors.

Candidate Requirements

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Safety, or a related technical discipline preferred.
• Preferred certifications include NEBOSH International General Certificate, NEBOSH Process Safety, OSHA 30 Hours, IOSH, PTW Certification, SIMOPS Awareness, Confined Space Entry, Hot Work, and LOTO training.
• Mandatory awareness of mechanical isolation practices.
• In-depth knowledge of mechanical isolation protocols, lockout/tagout processes, and hazards associated with stored energy.
• Competent in interpreting isolation certificates, mechanical schematics, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and isolation lists.
• Exceptional detail orientation for documentation and verification tasks.
• Strong communication skills to engage effectively with mechanical teams, PTW stakeholders, and supervisors.
• Capability to recognize unsafe conditions and enforce immediate permit suspension as required.
• Organized and adept in coordination responsibilities.
• A minimum of nine years’ experience in mechanical operations, commissioning, maintenance, or health and safety roles, preferably within shipyards, oil and gas, or industrial sectors.
• Fluency in English is essential; proficiency in Arabic, Urdu, or Hindi is advantageous.
