Role Overview
This part-time cook position located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Germany involves preparing a variety of simple foods and short-order items, maintaining kitchen sanitation, and operating kitchen equipment safely. The role requires adherence to established food safety and cooking procedures while supporting meal service efficiently.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook simple items such as pancakes, sausages, eggs, hamburgers, and vegetables—both fresh and canned.
- Prepare hot cereals, concentrated or dehydrated soups, sauces, gravies, and cold sandwich fillings.
- Set up and replenish salad bars regularly.
- Process food by peeling, chopping, grinding, paring, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring, or breading.
- Weigh, measure, and assemble ingredients for both regular and modified menu items, mixing according to precise recipes.
- Follow proper storage procedures by covering, dating, and storing leftovers correctly.
- Operate various kitchen equipment powered by gas, electricity, steam, or microwave, including disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly, while following safety precautions.
- Maintain cleanliness of work areas and equipment per schedule, including worktables, floors, and walk-in refrigerators.
- Adhere to sanitation standards to prevent food contamination and control spoilage and infection.
- Carry out any additional duties as assigned.
Skills and Knowledge Requirements
- Understanding of basic food preparation techniques and cooking of a limited variety of foods or short orders.
- Ability to read and comprehend food service documents such as food labels, standardized recipes, and basic instructions.
- Proficiency in basic math for ingredient calculation and yield estimation, including unit conversions between standard and metric measurements.
- Skill in handling, operating, cleaning, and maintaining common kitchen appliances, including griddles, broilers, and grinders.
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, infection control, and preventing spoilage.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Work involves continuous standing and walking, frequent bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and stooping.
- Must be capable of lifting or moving up to 40 pounds independently and heavier items with assistance.
- The kitchen is typically well-lit but hot and noisy, with exposure to steam, cooking odors, and variable temperatures from freezers and refrigerators.
- Work areas include tile floors that may be slippery or present hazards such as burns or cuts.
Position Conditions and Additional Requirements
- U.S. citizenship required along with a valid U.S. passport and a minimum age of 18 years.
- Compliance with pre-employment background checks and Child and Youth National Agency Check with Inquiries (CNACI) is mandatory.
- Completion of a pre-employment physical examination is necessary.
- Ability to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must submit Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service registration.
- Completion of initial food sanitation and safety training within the first 30 days, along with annual refresher courses is required.
- Direct Deposit and Social Security Card must be provided upon appointment.
- High School diploma or equivalent required; transcripts must be included in application.
- A one-year probationary period may apply.
- This position is limited tenure, not exceeding 15 months, with dorm-style housing provided; transportation conditions apply.
- The duty station is Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, requiring residency within commuting distance.
