Consumer Health Inspector

About the Role

The City of Mansfield, Texas is seeking a Consumer Health Inspector to perform health and safety inspections to ensure compliance with city, state, and federal health codes. Under the guidance of the Consumer Health Supervisor, this role aims to identify and mitigate health hazards to protect public health. The inspector will also help promote the city's True NORTH values in their daily work.

Key Duties

• Perform routine health inspections in various establishments including food service outlets, temporary food events, grocery and convenience stores, childcare centers, and inspect swimming pools and spas.
• Enforce federal, state, and local consumer and environmental health regulations and apply efficient measures to address unsanitary conditions.
• Conduct on-site inspections during construction to ensure compliance with health regulations.
• Analyze inspection data to optimize resource allocation for site visitations.
• Investigate public complaints related to consumer and environmental health, including disease outbreaks linked to food, water, or vectors.
• Support epidemiological investigations of food-borne illnesses when necessary.
• Issue notices and citations as required based on inspection results.
• Respond to inquiries, prepare comprehensive reports and suggest ordinance improvements.
• Conduct plan reviews for new or remodeled food and childcare facilities, pools, hotels, motels, and mobile food vendors.
• Educate the public about food safety, illness prevention, sanitation, and pool maintenance.
• Participate in special research projects, surveys, and report preparations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with at least 30 semester hours in basic or applied sciences as mandated by the Texas Administrative Code.
• Completion of FDA-required training and relevant experience in environmental health inspections may warrant special consideration.
• Must successfully pass the Texas Sanitarian examination within six months of hire if not already a Registered Sanitarian in Texas.
• Required to obtain Registered Sanitarian in Training status within six months and Texas Professional Sanitarian license within two years of employment.
• Valid Texas driver’s license is mandatory.
• Two years of progressive experience in consumer health or related regulatory roles is preferred.
• Possession of Texas Department of State Health Services Registered Sanitarian License and TCEQ Designated Representative License (OSSF) are desirable.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion.
• The role involves light physical work requiring exertion up to 20 pounds occasionally.
• Visual acuity is necessary to ensure detailed and accurate inspections.
• Exposure to various workplace hazards such as mechanical parts, odors, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes, noise, gases, vibrations, and confined spaces may occur.
