Job description

Role overview

Mercer, part of Marsh, is looking for a Senior Associate to join its Compensation Consulting practice. The preferred location for this position is Toronto, though candidates based in Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, London, Ottawa, Regina, Vancouver, or Winnipeg may also be considered. This role follows a hybrid schedule and requires at least three days each week in the office.

In this position, you will work on complex compensation and total rewards consulting assignments for organizations across a wide range of sectors and sizes. Your work will help clients attract and keep strong talent by shaping workforce strategies and reward programs. You will manage projects end to end, work directly with clients, and guide analytical work used to design, assess, and implement executive and workforce compensation programs. The position also supports business development through proposal writing, RFP responses, and development of whitepapers and presentations. You will partner closely with the Canadian Compensation Consulting team and tap into Mercer’s wider network of compensation specialists.

Key responsibilities

  • Advise senior leaders on remuneration matters, including pay competitiveness, performance measurement, and governance or regulatory considerations.
  • Supervise and coach analysts so multiple compensation and total rewards assignments are delivered on schedule and to a strong standard.
  • Research organizational challenges and market developments, then turn those findings into compensation, rewards, talent attraction, retention, and business strategy insights.
  • Carry out market benchmarking and peer-group analysis to evaluate how competitive an organization’s pay and rewards practices are.
  • Design and apply job evaluation approaches, including assistance with job description drafting and evaluation exercises.
  • Perform federal and provincial pay equity assessments to support compliance planning.
  • Prepare polished reports and presentations for clients, including recommendations for senior management, HR teams, boards, and executives.
  • Contribute ideas in team discussions to shape client solutions and identify opportunities for business growth and sales.

Required experience and qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business, mathematics, statistics, or human resources.
  • At least 5 years of experience in compensation or in a closely related HR or management consulting role.
  • Background advising public and private sector organizations on compensation strategy, market competitiveness, pay-for-performance, incentive design, equity strategy, change-in-control planning, mergers and acquisitions, board pay, and related topics.
  • Proven ability to analyze large, complex datasets and present conclusions clearly through Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex formulas, functions, and multi-sheet integrated financial or analytical models.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, quantitative, qualitative, and technical problem-solving capabilities.
  • Solid project management experience handling several concurrent workstreams, timelines, teams, and deliverables.

Preferred profile

  • MBA is an asset.
  • Strong commercial awareness and financial understanding will help you stand out.

Why this role stands out

  • Access to professional development, meaningful work, and supportive leadership.
  • A collaborative and inclusive culture where you can help build new solutions and make an impact for colleagues, clients, and communities.
  • Opportunity to grow within a large organization with broad career paths and a comprehensive rewards package.
