Job description
Overview
This opportunity is being advertised on behalf of a partner organization that handles applications and subsequent hiring steps directly. The employer is seeking a Community Engineer in the United Arab Emirates, with openings across multiple seniority levels.
The role is centered on helping build, expand, and sustain global open source communities behind widely used Linux-based technologies. It combines technical fluency with community leadership and program delivery, making it well suited to someone who enjoys working across both engineering and contributor ecosystems.
You will serve as the connection point between contributors, developers, and internal engineering teams, ensuring that community efforts stay aligned with technical priorities. The job also involves improving contributor journeys, strengthening collaboration, and supporting open source participation at scale.
This is a fully remote role within a globally distributed environment, with interaction across time zones and cultures. The position is a strong fit for someone enthusiastic about open source, Linux, and the long-term health of developer communities.
Key accountabilities
- Plan, coordinate, and expand community programs that increase participation and engagement across open source ecosystems.
- Act as the communication link between contributors and internal teams such as engineering, product, and developer relations.
- Streamline contribution pathways by improving processes, reducing barriers, and helping contributors complete technical work successfully.
- Create clear written and technical materials, including blog content, status updates, and documentation, to share community progress and initiatives.
- Participate actively in open source spaces such as forums, chat platforms, social channels, and events.
- Represent the organization at conferences, meetups, and industry gatherings through talks and presentations.
- Spot opportunities to improve tooling, workflows, and the overall contributor experience at scale.
Requirements
- A strong interest in open source software, Linux ecosystems, and collaborative development.
- Proven involvement in open source communities, backed by a public record such as GitHub contributions, speaking engagements, blog writing, or similar proof of activity.
- Solid understanding of developer workflows and practical exposure to tools used in open source development, such as version control, CI/CD, packaging, DevOps, or containers.
- Experience contributing to or working with Linux-based systems; familiarity with Ubuntu or comparable distributions is preferred.
- Excellent communication, writing, and presentation abilities, with comfort addressing both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong planning and program management skills, including the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives independently.
- A self-directed working style and the ability to stay accountable while operating remotely across a distributed global team.
- Background in community management, developer advocacy, or software development is an advantage.
- Willingness to travel internationally for in-person events and collaboration sessions.
Perks and benefits
- Competitive global compensation based on experience, location, and performance.
- Annual bonus or commission opportunities tied to performance.
- Yearly compensation and performance reviews.
- Fully remote work setup with international collaboration.
- Annual learning and development allowance of USD 2,000.
- Paid annual leave, along with maternity and paternity leave policies.
