Role overview
The Communications Specialist role at the City of Pearland supports multiple city departments by helping plan and coordinate a broad public information, media relations, and communications effort. The position focuses on public outreach, resident education, and timely communication across print, digital, social, and video channels.
Core duties
- Create and design promotional content for digital, print, and video use so residents receive clear, accurate, and timely updates.
- Keep the city website current, review performance data, identify improvement opportunities, and publish content as needed.
- Represent the city at events by capturing photos and video, updating social media, and live streaming when appropriate.
- Prepare press releases and other public-facing announcements.
- Help write, edit, and design Pearland in Motion, the city calendar, the annual report, and other publications assigned.
- Develop graphics for flyers and other projects.
- Use campaign results and performance metrics to prepare post-campaign reports.
- Produce newsletters and collect content for the quarterly newsletter, including editing support.
- Handle related duties as assigned.
Working conditions and other details
This position requires a flexible schedule, and evening or weekend work may be needed. The successful candidate must be comfortable responding to service requests from city departments and working across a variety of communications tasks.
Education, experience, and licensing
A bachelor's degree, or equivalent specialized coursework/training completed over four years of college, is required in communications, graphic design, marketing, or a closely related field. The role also requires one to three years of relevant experience in communications, graphic design, marketing, or a similar area. A valid Texas Class C driver's license is required.
Preferred qualifications
Experience with Adobe InDesign, Canva, and Photoshop is expected. Strong writing ability is important. Spanish bilingual ability is an added advantage.
