Role Overview

The Communications Officer will support the Communications Department in creating and sharing information about Amref Health Africa’s work in Kenya under the Imarisha-jamii project. The role helps ensure communication plans are carried out effectively and that the organization’s purpose, programs, and achievements are clearly communicated to both internal teams and external audiences.

Key Responsibilities

Content development and management

  • Prepare, refine, and review communication content for internal and external audiences while following brand standards and messaging guidelines.
  • Work with different teams to gather stories, progress updates, and achievements for newsletters and reports issued every month.
  • Partner with designers and videographers to create engaging visual communication materials.

Media engagement

  • Support the coordination of media activities such as press briefings, interviews, and visits to project locations.
  • Build and keep current a media contact database while maintaining good working relationships with journalists and other media professionals.
  • Monitor media coverage to understand the visibility and influence of Amref’s stories in public spaces.

Digital communication

  • Work with the digital team to plan, publish, and track content across Amref’s social media channels.
  • Respond to audience comments and questions in a prompt and professional way.
  • Use digital analytics tools to prepare monthly reports on website and social media performance, including recommendations for improvement.

Events and public relations

  • Help plan, organize, and run public relations events while ensuring logistical arrangements are handled efficiently.
  • Coordinate with media partners to support publicity and coverage for events.
  • After events, prepare reports on outcomes, media coverage, and areas that could be improved.

Administration and records

  • Keep a well-organized digital archive of communication assets so that photos, videos, and documents can be easily accessed.
  • Record communication activities, including media coverage, outreach efforts, and results achieved.
  • Assist in budgeting for communication activities while maintaining cost control and compliance with approved budgets.

Research and analysis

  • Track health-related news and trends to identify communication opportunities for Amref.
  • Support periodic stakeholder analysis to help tailor communication approaches to different audience groups.

Collaboration and partnership support

  • Work closely with other departments to collect relevant information for communication content.
  • Take part in cross-department meetings, share updates on communication work, and contribute ideas for future campaigns.
  • Assist in partnership development by helping prepare presentations that clearly communicate Amref’s value proposition.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Development Communication, or a similar field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a communications-focused role.
  • Project management experience will be considered an added advantage.
  • Practical knowledge of internal communication tools and channels.
  • Experience working in Arid and Semi-Arid (ASAL) regions is an added advantage.
  • Strong planning, coordination, organization, communication, and follow-up abilities.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to produce quality work under tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • A hardworking, results-driven approach with strong time management.
  • Ability to assess communication effectiveness and write for different audiences.
  • Good diplomacy, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well with others.
