Job description

About Trees for the Future

Trees for the Future (TREES) is an international agroforestry organisation that has spent more than three decades helping farming communities improve livelihoods, restore degraded land, and strengthen ecosystems. Its Forest Garden Approach enables farmers to regenerate land, plant large numbers of trees, diversify crop production, and build more resilient food systems. The organisation works in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and has supported the planting of more than 400 million trees globally.

In Tanzania, TREES has operated since 2015 and currently works across Mwanza, Simiyu, Singida, Tabora, and Iringa. The programme has partnered with farmers in 11 district councils to advance sustainable agriculture, environmental restoration, food security, ecosystem health, and household poverty reduction. Applicants must be legally permitted to work in Tanzania.

Role Summary

The Communications Coordinator will lead the delivery of TREES Tanzania’s communications strategy and work closely with programme teams as well as the Marketing and Communications function in Nairobi and the Central Office. The role is responsible for strengthening internal and external communications, keeping brand and donor requirements aligned, and ensuring the country programme is represented clearly and consistently.

This position oversees visibility, branding, public engagement, media relations, content creation, documentation, knowledge sharing, and campaign support. It also serves as a key link between TREES Tanzania, donors, partners, the media, and the public, helping position the organisation as credible, visible, and trusted. The role reports to the Country Director and has matrix reporting to the Regional Marketing and Communications Manager.

  • Work with programme teams to create audience-focused key messages and IEC materials for sharing country-level activities.
  • Track communications outputs and analyse progress regularly to identify gaps and inform decision-making.
  • Support adaptive programming by helping teams apply evidence, learning, and data in communication and implementation approaches.
  • Advise programme staff on communication planning, branding, donor visibility, and messaging requirements.
  • Ensure all materials follow TREES brand rules and donor visibility commitments.
  • Manage the production and distribution of branded items for campaigns, events, donor engagement, and public outreach.
  • Prepare media kits, press releases, and talking points for advocacy and visibility efforts.
  • Build relationships with journalists, media outlets, influencers, and other communication stakeholders in the country.
  • Arrange interviews, media visits, press events, and media coverage with the TREES Tanzania spokesperson or other designated staff.
  • Maintain an updated media contact database at national, regional, and district levels.
  • Support public awareness campaigns that increase community engagement and strengthen organisational reputation.
  • Create communication products such as newsletters, success stories, case studies, reports, speeches, social media content, photos, and videos.
  • Carry out field visits to collect stories, images, and implementation evidence that demonstrate programme impact.
  • Represent the country programme on the Regional Communications Team and coordinate regularly with the Regional Country Communications Manager.
  • Organise and upload visual assets, case studies, and learning content into the Canto photo bank and other knowledge repositories.
  • Oversee content development processes and ensure compliance with filming, photography, consent, and documentation procedures.
  • Lead the preparation and circulation of newsletters, weekly highlights, internal updates, and stakeholder communication materials.
  • Support donor field visits in coordination with programme and global communications teams.
  • Compile and share Inside TREES and other regular newsletters with staff, donors, and key stakeholders.
  • Summarise project results, lessons, and evidence into knowledge products such as learning briefs, best-practice documents, and case studies.
  • Encourage collaboration, learning, and knowledge exchange across departments and teams.
  • Maintain organised, accessible, and well-archived communication materials in both digital and print formats.
  • Help teams establish reliable internal information-sharing and knowledge management systems.
  • Document and share innovations, lessons learned, and best practices to strengthen institutional memory and organisational learning.
  • Ensure full adherence to safeguarding policies, ethical communication rules, and organisational procedures.
  • Confirm that participant stories, photographs, and audiovisual content have properly completed informed consent forms.
  • Promote respectful, inclusive, culturally sensitive communication that protects dignity and reflects diversity across gender, age, disability, religion, and other protected characteristics.
  • Uphold TREES values, integrity, and ethical standards in all communications work.
