Job description
Role Overview
Galin Education is looking for a college counselor to guide students and their families through the college search and admissions journey. This role calls for excellent communication, the ability to build trust with both teenagers and parents, and strong knowledge of colleges and the admissions landscape. The counselor will also collaborate with other counselors and essay coaches to support students.
The position reports to the Director of Admissions Counseling. Since most work involves high school students and their parents, schedules usually fall in the late afternoon, evening, and weekend hours. There is flexibility as long as timing is coordinated with families and the broader team. The role is expected to grow and improve over time, with the right candidate helping refine and expand existing practices.
Families may choose either hourly support or a comprehensive program that is not tracked by hours. Students typically begin working with a counselor in early junior year. A part-time counselor must commit to supporting at least 5 comprehensive students, or the hourly equivalent, in each graduating class.
Responsibilities
- Support students and families through every stage of the college admissions process.
- Manage a caseload of about 30 students per graduating class in a full-time role, or at least 5 students in a part-time role.
- Stay in regular contact with parents and guardians.
- Use publicly available information and data to shape recommendations and guidance.
- Take part in ongoing professional development such as conferences, webinars, and college visits.
- Keep up with changing trends in college admissions.
- Create training and learning resources for yourself and other team members.
- For full-time counselors, write blog posts and articles for students and parents.
- For full-time counselors, organize speaking events related to college admissions.
- For full-time counselors, build relationships with local high school counselors and other education professionals.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience in admissions at a selective college or as an independent college counselor, or at least 5 years of experience as a high school counselor.
- Strong writing ability.
- Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational ability.
- Comfort using web-based tools to advise students.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends when needed based on student schedules.
Compensation and Benefits
- Full-time compensation is a salary of $70,000 to $90,000, depending on prior experience and education.
- Part-time compensation is $60 to $90 per billable hour.
- Team members also receive a prep-time rate for non-billable work.
- Eligible employees may receive a 401(k) match of up to 5%.
- Full-time employees receive a health insurance stipend.
- Paid membership in professional organizations is included.
- A travel stipend is provided for college visits and conferences.
- Full-time employees receive 3 weeks of PTO.
Schedule and Work Setup
This role may be performed remotely or from one of the employer's offices. Working hours are typically in the later afternoons, evenings, and weekends, with some flexibility as long as coordination with families and the team is maintained.
Additional Information
The position reports to the Director of Admissions Counseling and will evolve over time as the selected candidate helps expand and enhance current practices.
