Role Overview

The Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Specialist is tasked with reviewing inpatient medical records to ensure documentation is accurate, comprehensive, and compliant. This role involves evaluating the severity of illness, risk of mortality, quality metrics, medical necessity, and supporting proper reimbursement. The CDI Specialist partners with physicians, coders, and other team members to enhance documentation quality and maintain diagnostic coding accuracy.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct both concurrent and retrospective chart reviews to verify the completeness and accuracy of clinical documentation.
• Maintain a documentation accuracy standard of 98%.
• Identify areas requiring clarification on diagnoses, procedures, Present on Admission indicators, severity of illness, risk adjustments, and clinical validations.
• Initiate compliant queries to physicians to resolve any conflicting or incomplete documentation.
• Collaborate with coding departments to ensure precise ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and DRG assignments.
• Analyze trends related to mortality rates, quality indicators, hospital-acquired conditions, and patient safety.
• Perform clinical validation reviews on conditions such as sepsis, respiratory failure, encephalopathy, malnutrition, and acute kidney injury.
• Adhere to productivity benchmarks including a 35-40% query rate, reviewing 20-25 cases daily, and sustaining a 98% accuracy rate.
• Engage in multidisciplinary rounds and lead provider education and documentation improvement activities.
• Support denial prevention efforts through documentation integrity initiatives.
• Keep up-to-date with CMS guidelines, ICD-10 standards, AHA coding clinics, and organizational compliance requirements.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse license with a bachelor's degree or higher, verified before starting.
• Minimum of seven years nursing experience, including five years in inpatient acute care.
• Proven experience auditing clinical documentation and coding using ICD-10, PCS guidelines, and knowledge of MS-DRG and APR-DRG.
• Clinical expertise applied to coding processes.
• Certification such as CCDS, CCS, or CDIP with seven years in clinical documentation or DRG validation.
• Familiarity with Solventum's HIS software suite, including 360 Encompass, is advantageous.
• Experience with telecommuting and proficiency in electronic medical records and chart auditing tools.
• Strong skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with excellent communication, presentation, analytical, and organizational abilities.

Additional Information

• Location: Remote within the United States.
• Travel Requirements: Up to 10% domestic or international travel might be necessary.
• Relocation support may be available.
• Employment eligibility requires legal authorization to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship.
• New hires starting on or after October 1, 2025, will participate in an on-site orientation, with travel expenses covered by the company.
• Compensation range for U.S. applicants: $96,000 to $132,000 annually, including base salary and potential incentives; benefits include health, dental, vision, retirement plans, and more.
