Overview
Somerset Council is seeking a dedicated Cleansing Operative to join their team in Glastonbury. This role involves hands-on work ensuring that the streets, parks, and public spaces of Somerset are clean, safe, and welcoming for the public. You will engage in outdoor tasks that contribute significantly to local community wellbeing by maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety in public environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform street cleansing activities such as litter collection, hand sweeping, emptying bins, removing fly-tipped waste, and cleaning public toilets.
- Collaborate with the street cleansing team to improve and sustain the environment with minimal inconvenience to the public.
- Drive non-LGV vehicles and operate machinery necessary for service tasks.
- Conduct routine vehicle and equipment maintenance checks, report faults, and ensure all tools are clean, safe, and functional.
- Report completed work and any encountered issues promptly to supervisors.
- Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols, safeguarding yourself and others.
- Maintain accurate documentation including timesheets, inspection logs, and defect reports.
- Support the delivery of an efficient and customer-focused environmental service.
Experience and Skills Required
- Practical experience in a hands-on role, preferably involving frontline or environmental services delivery within a team setting.
- Awareness of the significance of maintaining a clean and safe public environment and the ability to work safely in these spaces.
- Capability to work independently, manage assigned workloads, and handle tools and machinery under guidance.
- Effective communication skills to engage professionally with colleagues, supervisors, and the public.
- Basic literacy and numeracy to maintain records and complete necessary paperwork accurately.
- Familiarity with conducting vehicle and equipment inspections and reporting defects.
Additional Details
- This is a permanent position offering 37 hours per week with two shift patterns: Monday to Friday or Saturday to Wednesday.
