Role Overview

The Chief Real Estate Development Officer (CREDO) is a pivotal senior leadership position accountable for steering Homestead's real estate platform, focusing on affordable homeownership, land strategy, and asset growth. Reporting directly to the CEO, the role oversees development activities, staff management, and ensures project delivery aligns with financial, environmental, and equity standards. The current pipeline includes over 500 homes in construction, predevelopment, and initial planning phases. The CREDO is tasked with advancing this portfolio while enhancing systems and organizational capacity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the entire real estate pipeline from site selection and feasibility assessments to funding, construction, and project finalization.
  • Immediately oversee an active portfolio covering multiple development stages including construction and planning.
  • Direct complex projects coordinating with architects, contractors, consultants, and public authorities to meet timelines, budgets, and quality goals.
  • Advance impactful developments in environments with phased funding, balancing risks with progress.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to expand organizational resources and pipeline capacity.
  • Organize and lead monthly Board of Delegates Real Estate Development Committee meetings and assist Board decision-making.
  • Manage and develop development staff through clear objectives, delegation, feedback, and accountability.
  • Partner with the CEO on capital strategies, key funding decisions, and lender relations.
  • Establish operational systems, policies, and controls vital for scaling production while mitigating risk, including leading Procore implementation for project and financial tracking.
  • Create standards and workflows that ensure consistent, high-quality project completion and sustainable organizational growth.
  • Represent the organization with public agencies, lenders, and partners.
  • Negotiate essential contracts and oversee complex partnerships.
  • Work jointly with the CEO and leadership to align development efforts with community priorities, ensuring culturally responsive and community-driven approaches.
  • Ensure development and contracting methods uphold the organization's commitments to racial and social equity.
  • Provide independent strategic guidance on real estate, pipeline growth, and risk to the CEO.
  • Oversee asset management including post-construction performance, warranty management, and construction issue resolution; support homeownership team stewardship efforts.
  • Implement feedback systems that improve project standards by leveraging operational insights to prevent repeated issues.
  • Integrate community partner priorities throughout all project phases, collaborating closely with relationship and advocacy leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • 8 to 12+ years of experience in real estate development.
  • Proven leadership of at least two simultaneous successful multifamily housing projects within the past 7 years.
  • Strong proficiency in financial analysis and pro forma development.
  • Experience managing and leading teams.
  • Track record of developing and executing organizational real estate development strategies.
  • Background in affordable housing or mission-driven development.
  • Knowledge of non-federal public funding sources and homeownership financing structures.
  • Capability to identify and secure complex or non-traditional funding sources.
  • Experience in community-based development or land stewardship.
  • Ability to work effectively across diverse racial, cultural, and experiential backgrounds, fostering trust.

Compensation and Benefits

Annual salary is $170,000. Benefits include health, dental, vision insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave.
