About the Role
This opportunity is with Wellington’s largest economy hotel, located within easy walking distance of major city venues including Takina, Te Papa, TSB and Sky Stadium. The property is known for handling larger groups efficiently while offering bright and lively dining spaces at Vivant restaurant, featuring a substantial buffet breakfast along with lunch and dinner served à la carte.
You will be part of a busy kitchen environment where your work directly shapes the guest dining experience. The role calls for someone who is comfortable operating in a fast-paced setting and who takes pride in consistent food quality, presentation, and service.
Key Duties
- Partner with the Head Chef and Sous Chefs to oversee the day-to-day running of the kitchen.
- Take ownership of your assigned section and make sure food is prepared, plated, and served to a high standard.
- Uphold food safety, hygiene, and health and safety requirements without exception.
- Guide junior kitchen staff and set a professional example through your conduct and work ethic.
- Assign tasks in a way that keeps service moving smoothly and meets operational needs.
- Help plan menu preparation and confirm that sufficient ingredients and supplies are ready for service.
- Check food quality throughout every stage of preparation and presentation.
- Cook and present dishes creatively and consistently while staying within budgeted cost targets.
- Manage stock carefully, including rotation of ingredients and reducing unnecessary waste.
- Store and handle food in line with hygiene and health regulations.
- Keep your section, tools, and workspaces clean, organised, and compliant at all times.
- Track daily food and product needs and communicate shortages or concerns to senior kitchen leaders in advance.
- Assist with coaching and developing junior members of the kitchen team.
Qualifications and Requirements
The ideal candidate can stay composed under pressure and work effectively in a busy, team-based kitchen. A Certificate in Cookery is required, along with relevant experience and qualifications. You should also be flexible enough to work across a 7-day roster, including morning and evening shifts. A genuine passion for cooking, quality, and presentation is essential, as is the ability to work in New Zealand.
