Role overview
This position is focused on supporting medication administration for residents under the guidance of the attending physician, nurse supervisor or charge nurse, and the Director of Nursing Services. All medication handling must align with nursing standards, facility procedures, and applicable state requirements.
Key responsibilities
The role includes safe preparation, administration, and documentation of medications, along with careful attention to resident identity, vital signs, medication records, and reporting of medication-related issues. The position also involves working closely with nursing staff, physicians, pharmacists, and facility leadership to support accurate medication practices and resident care.
- Carry out medication administration in line with facility policies and procedures.
- Identify, document, and report medication administration mistakes.
- Support efforts to analyze medication errors and help prevent future incidents.
- Complete required records, forms, charts, and reports accurately and on time.
- Maintain effective working relationships with nursing staff, physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
- Escalate resident complaints or concerns to the Director of Nursing Services.
- Take part in inspections or surveys conducted by authorized government agencies when requested.
- Participate in quality assurance work, pharmaceutical services activities, and other committees or programs that improve medication-pass accuracy and performance.
- Prepare, give, and record oral and topical medications safely and accurately as prescribed.
- Confirm that medications brought in by newly admitted residents are reviewed and identified by the physician or pharmacy/pharmacist.
- Follow proper procedures for medication destruction, including required documentation and supervision by the facility pharmacist or Director of Nursing Services.
- Apply all medication labeling rules and ensure medications are labeled correctly before use.
- Document medications according to facility charting procedures.
- Help document and remove medications that have been discontinued.
- Handle drug receipt errors according to facility process, including notification of the delivery source and nursing leadership.
- Prepare written error documentation for drug receipt issues, with signatures from both a witness and yourself.
- Manage held medications when residents are transferred or when prescriptions are stopped by the attending physician.
- Observe medication intake or application and record any refusal or non-administration along with the reason.
- Notify the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or Director of Nursing Services right away about medication reactions or errors.
- Confirm resident identity before administering any treatment or medication.
- Measure, record, and report resident vital signs accurately.
- Support resident self-administration of medications according to facility rules.
- Use common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terminology correctly in medication-related work.
- Attend continuing education to stay current in the profession and keep certification active.
- Protect resident health information and report any suspected privacy violations.
- Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempts to access the facility information system.
- Complete all assigned work according to policy and supervisor instructions.
- Follow work assignments and schedules as provided.
- Cooperate with colleagues across departments to support resident care needs.
- Keep all resident care information confidential, including protected health information.
Qualifications
Applicants should have at least a high school education or an equivalent qualification. They must also be a licensed Medication Aide who has completed a state-approved training program and any required examinations under state law. Strong reading, writing, communication, math, and problem-solving abilities are needed for this role.
Working conditions
This is a full-time onsite position in Woodside, Wellington, New Zealand. The role has no supervisory responsibilities. The job may require prolonged computer use, regular sitting, standing, walking, speaking, listening, and reading, as well as frequent use of office equipment such as a copier, scanner, fax machine, telephone, and calculator. The employee may need to lift or move up to 25 pounds and could be expected to assist with resident evacuation during emergencies. The workplace is generally low to moderate in noise level.
