Role overview
This position is centered on operating the register and scanner to total customer purchases, take payments, and help with bagging, all while delivering friendly and respectful service at the checkout area.

Key duties
- Use the cash register and electronic scanner to ring up purchases across a range of grocery categories such as dry goods, frozen foods, dairy, produce, poultry, fish, beef, and pork.
- Handle payments and financial transactions accurately, including cash, checks, credit cards, food stamps, WIC, loyalty cards, gift certificates, rain checks, voids, and coupons, following company rules.
- Weigh customer items and pack purchases carefully.
- Operate checkout tools efficiently, including the register, scanner, scale, and conveyor belts.
- Keep the front-end area stocked and organized, including items such as newspapers, periodicals, and candy.
- Use product codes and PLUs correctly and report any pricing or signage issues.
- Stay updated on store programs and product placement.
- Explain loyalty programs, in-store promotions, scans, and coupons to customers while maintaining a service-focused approach.
- Follow company standards for security, cash handling, drawer balancing, handling damaged or spoiled merchandise, and the sale of alcohol and tobacco.
- Keep the department clean, stocked, and aligned with safety and sanitation rules.
- Help with stocking tasks when needed.
- Follow PPE, food safety, cleaning, and guest experience guidelines.
- Support other departments when customer service needs require it.
- Take on additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED is preferred.
- At least 1 year of retail or related experience is preferred.
- Strong verbal communication skills and a polite, effective customer interaction style.
- Good customer service and organizational abilities with attention to detail.
- Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills are required.
Physical and work conditions
This role may require frequent lifting and moving of up to 30 pounds, and occasional lifting or moving of up to 50 pounds. It also involves extended periods of standing and walking, along with frequent bending, stooping, twisting, and turning. The work environment is a standard retail setting with changing temperatures and occasional outdoor weather exposure. Noise levels are generally low to moderate. Travel needs may differ depending on assignment.
