Job description

Overview

Based in London, the Casework Officer is responsible for supporting the effective management and disclosure of material related to litigation, inquiries, Subject Access Requests (SARs), and civil claims within Specialist Military Units (SMU). This role ensures that casework is carried out with precision, maintaining secure, complete, and auditable records to comply with Defence's legal and governance obligations. The position requires working 37 hours per week on-site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain comprehensive, secure, and auditable case files, ensuring the timely retrieval and organization of material supporting legal teams engaged in litigation, inquiries, SARs, and civil claims.
  • Prepare and verify evidential bundles, ensuring they are accurate, complete and consistent with case strategies.
  • Execute redactions, reclassifications, and controlled releases of sensitive documents, adhering strictly to MOD and SMU policies to guarantee legality and proportionality.
  • Manage SharePoint governance for casework, including administering document libraries, applying metadata, enforcing naming conventions, controlling versions, and preserving knowledge records.
  • Deliver core records management by recording protectively marked materials, digitizing physical records, and maintaining secure stewardship over the long term.
  • Oversee archive processes such as preparing files for archiving, recalling sensitive materials for SMU cases, and maintaining the SMU Contract Database.
  • Provide secretariat and coordination support, managing correspondence, updating case trackers, and controlling information flows across various workstreams.

Candidate Profile

The ideal applicant is a dependable professional with exceptional organisational and detail-oriented skills capable of handling sensitive information securely. While direct experience in related fields such as casework, disclosure, redaction, or information governance is advantageous, it is not a requirement. The role demands a quick learner who can exercise sound judgement and work confidently with evidential materials within a secure environment. Strong written communication, analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a high-pressure environment are necessary.

Essential Attributes

  • Highly organised with attention to detail, maintaining secure and accurate case documentation.
  • Excellent written communication skills for producing clear, well-structured records and correspondence.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities efficiently and meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong analytical capabilities to evaluate information relevance and apply applicable policies.
  • Collaborative working approach engaging effectively with legal, policy, redaction, and records teams.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in casework, disclosure, redaction, or records management within sensitive or regulatory environments.
  • Familiarity with preparing evidential bundles and supporting legal procedures such as litigation and inquiries.
  • Knowledge of managing structured documentation systems, including SharePoint governance or controlled databases.

Additional Information

This position is restricted to sole UK nationals only. The role operates under a six-month probation for external recruits new to the Civil Service. Relocation expenses are not provided, and travel costs for interviews will not be reimbursed. The MOD promotes a smoke-free working policy and supports diversity and inclusion across its workforce.

Salary is £30,740 annually, with an additional government pension contribution of £8,905. Flexible working options and customised learning and development opportunities are available. Please note childcare voucher schemes are affected by moves to the MOD.

Applicants are advised that pay-related allowances may be reviewed, potentially impacting this role. The selection process includes evaluation of specific behaviours such as adaptability, teamwork, service quality, delivery efficiency, and communication skills. Use of artificial intelligence in application content must be original and truthful; plagiarised submissions may be disqualified.
