Job description
About Mercury
Mercury is a forward-looking New Zealand organisation delivering energy and telecommunications services to more people than any other provider in the country. It is focused on renewable energy and is committed to building a more sustainable future. Its purpose is to care for tomorrow by connecting people and places today, and to help create a better future for its people, communities, and Aotearoa New Zealand.
The opportunity
The Customer business is moving into a new phase of growth and change, and Mercury has introduced several new roles to strengthen how the function is structured for the future. These roles are designed to improve accountability, commercial ownership, and alignment across customer channels so the business stays efficient, customer-centred, and prepared for what comes next.
Reporting to the Chief Customer Officer, this Business Manager role will help enable performance, alignment, and delivery across Mercury’s Customer portfolio. It is a senior commercial and operational influence role that works closely with the CCO to shape the operating rhythm, coordination, and effectiveness of the Customer function. Although the role does not include direct people management, it has broad influence across the portfolio and supports the Customer business as a commercially disciplined and strategically aligned team.
This role offers the chance to contribute to a major transformation within one of New Zealand’s best-known organisations. You will work alongside senior leaders, gain broad exposure across the Customer portfolio, and help shape how Mercury delivers for customers and the business. The environment is fast-paced, high-performing, and purpose driven, with strong potential to grow into future senior leadership positions.
If you are commercially astute, confident handling complexity, and motivated by the opportunity to help shape a business through transformation, this could be a strong fit.
What you will do
- Own the operating cadence, governance routines, and performance reporting across the Customer function.
- Assist the Chief Customer Officer with integrated planning, prioritisation, and execution for the Customer portfolio.
- Strengthen performance management and commercial analysis to support better decisions.
- Link work across Customer Care, Customer Operations, Billing, Brand and Marketing, Pricing, Consumer P&L, Sales, and Channel teams.
- Turn complex information into clear conclusions, recommendations, and next steps.
- Create high-quality presentations, briefing papers, and status updates for senior leaders, executives, and board audiences.
- Work with Customer leaders to improve alignment, accountability, and delivery outcomes.
- Support strategic initiatives that advance Mercury’s wider Customer transformation.
- Use influence and relationship-building to drive results without direct line management responsibility.
What you will bring
Mercury is looking for a commercially strong, highly capable operator who can move comfortably between strategy, performance, and delivery. You may come from consulting, business management, or another senior commercial or operational role in a large and complex organisation.
- A tertiary qualification in Business, Commerce, Technology, or a similar field, or equivalent experience and knowledge.
- 8 to 12+ years of experience in commercial, strategy, or general management roles.
- Solid understanding of P&L and strong financial modelling capability.
- Experience managing cross-functional portfolios in complex customer-facing environments.
- Advanced analytical skills and confidence working with performance data.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior and executive stakeholders.
- Experience in retail energy, telecommunications, financial services, or other subscription-based industries is highly desirable.
Why join Mercury
- 5 additional leave days each year through MyDays.
- A one-off tax-free payment of $400 to help set up a home office.
- A diverse workplace that values and encourages individual strengths and talents.
- Annual salary reviews, a strong parental leave policy, and the option to buy extra leave.
- Career pathways, opportunities, and facilities that come with working for one of New Zealand’s largest multi-utility providers.
- A flexible working policy with the freedom and trust to work from the office and from home.
- Discounted health insurance plus free life and income insurance.
- A strong wellbeing programme, including up to $100 for annual check-ups and a confidential support service.
- Gender affirmation leave and compassionate bereavement leave, including leave for the loss of a pet.
