Job description

Role overview

This opportunity is for a Business Intelligence Analyst located in Canada and posted on behalf of a partner organization that handles the application process and all subsequent hiring steps. The role sits within a major digital and regulatory modernization program aimed at improving how environmental and natural resource data is gathered, governed, analyzed, and used across public-sector systems.

You will transform large and complex datasets into practical insights that help teams track compliance, monitor performance, and make informed decisions. The work is centered on modern BI tooling, cloud-based data environments, and stronger enterprise analytics capabilities. A significant part of the role involves building dashboards, reports, and data models that give stakeholders near real-time visibility into outcomes and operational status. You will work closely with business users, data engineers, and architects to convert changing needs into reliable and scalable analytics solutions. As the program grows, the scope may expand into broader enterprise analytics work beyond the core regulatory platform.

Key accountabilities

  • Create and enhance advanced Power BI dashboards, scorecards, and interactive visual reports that support regulatory and operational choices.
  • Develop robust data models using Power BI, DAX, and Power Query (M).
  • Build and refine ETL workflows and connect data from Azure-based systems as well as on-premise databases.
  • Partner with data engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to support pipelines, semantic models, and reporting structures.
  • Collect business needs and KPI definitions, then convert them into organized BI solutions and reporting frameworks.
  • Prepare executive-ready insights through concise dashboards, reports, and visual storytelling.
  • Improve solution performance through techniques such as incremental refresh, query tuning, and data model optimization.
  • Apply security controls including row-level security, access restrictions, and compliance-focused practices.
  • Perform detailed analysis to surface trends, outliers, and opportunities to improve operations.
  • Assist end users with training, supporting documentation, and adoption of BI dashboards and tools.
  • Publish and support datasets and dashboards in Power BI Service, including scheduled refreshes and ongoing monitoring.
  • Investigate and apply AI-enabled features that strengthen data exploration, anomaly identification, and insight creation.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related discipline is required.
  • At least 3 years of BI or data analytics experience, with the upper range extending beyond 6 years.
  • Strong practical experience with Microsoft Power BI, including DAX, Power Query, and dashboard creation.
  • Hands-on exposure to Azure data platforms and multi-source data integration.
  • Solid knowledge of data modeling, ETL design, and semantic layer architecture.
  • Ability to turn unclear business questions into structured analytics deliverables.
  • Strong analytical ability to identify patterns, trends, and actionable findings.
  • Experience handling large datasets and optimizing BI performance is important.
  • Understanding of data governance, security, and regulatory compliance is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills for presenting insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Comfort working independently while also collaborating in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in government, regulatory, or environmental data environments would be beneficial.

Benefits

  • Competitive pay aligned with BI and data analytics positions in Canada.
  • Chance to contribute to a high-impact digital transformation and regulatory modernization effort.
  • Flexibility to work remotely or in a hybrid setup, depending on project needs.
  • Exposure to modern cloud data ecosystems and Microsoft Azure analytics technologies.
  • Strong opportunities for career growth in enterprise data and business intelligence.
  • A collaborative setting alongside experienced data and engineering professionals.
  • Work on critical datasets that support environmental and regulatory decision-making.
  • Access to advanced BI tools, AI-supported analytics, and modern data stack technologies.
