Job description

About the Opportunity

Byron Shire Council is looking for driven, enthusiastic Bush Regenerators to join its Open Spaces and Facilities team. In this role, you will work across some of the Shire’s most environmentally important locations, helping protect and restore native plant communities, strengthen biodiversity results, and support delivery of the Council’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy.

This is a hands-on outdoor role in varied natural settings, ideal for someone who wants to contribute to ecological restoration and conservation while being part of a team focused on meaningful environmental work.

There are 3 positions available: 1 permanent full-time role and 2 full-time term roles ending in August 2027.

What You’ll Do

  • Carry out bush regeneration activities in line with Bush Regeneration Action Plans and guidance from supervisors.
  • Perform vegetation management and control environmental weeds using recognised bush regeneration methods.
  • Support ecological restoration work that helps native plant communities and habitats recover.
  • Monitor sites, keep accurate work records, and contribute to reports and data collection.
  • Help prepare Bush Regeneration Action Plans and assist with implementation of the Biodiversity Conservation Strategy.
  • Take part in community education and engagement initiatives that encourage environmental care.
  • Work safely, cooperate with others, and contribute to a constructive team environment and ongoing improvement.

What You’ll Need

  • A qualification in Bush Regeneration, Conservation and Ecosystem Management, Conservation Land Management, or a similar discipline.
  • Practical experience with bush regeneration and ecological restoration methods, including herbicide application for weed control and supporting native species recovery.
  • Ability to recognise native plant and animal species, along with environmental and noxious weeds.
  • Good understanding of ecological restoration principles and effective vegetation management practices.
  • Strong communication and people skills, plus the ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • A strong focus on workplace health and safety and delivering quality community outcomes.
  • Current Driver Licence, First Aid Certificate, and accredited Chemical User Certificate.
  • Preferred knowledge of Byron Shire flora and fauna, Chainsaw Certificate, Traffic Control qualification (Yellow Card), and Microsoft Office skills.

Conditions and Benefits

  • 1 permanent full-time role.
  • 2 full-time term roles available until August 2027.
  • 38 hours per week on a 9-day fortnight.
  • Pay aligned to the NSW Local Government (State) Award, at $1,190.06 to $1,378.87 per 38-hour week, depending on skills and experience.
  • Annual salary reviews and award-based increases.
  • 12% superannuation.
  • Support for education and training.
  • Salary packaging options.
  • Employee Assistance Program with 4 sessions per year.
  • Fitness Passport access.
  • Health and wellbeing days.
  • Opportunity to work with an experienced and committed team.

Location

The role is based at Mullumbimby Depot, although Council may require work at other sites when operational needs arise.

Additional Information

Byron Shire Council values diversity, inclusion and equality, and encourages people from all backgrounds, abilities and identities to apply. Flexible working arrangements may be discussed, including part-time, job-share and working from different locations. Reasonable adjustments can be provided for applicants with disability during recruitment and in the workplace.

The organisation is committed to being child safe and to embedding Child Safe Standards across leadership, governance and culture, while supporting staff and volunteers in their responsibilities to keep children safe from harm and abuse.

Pre-Employment Screening

  • Reference checks will preferably be completed with your current or most recent supervisor, who should be able to comment directly on your work performance. Any concerns about this should be raised in your application and discussed with the selection panel.
  • A functional health assessment may be used to assess whether you can safely meet the physical demands of the role.
  • Background screening may confirm the details provided in your application and may include checks such as criminal history, employment history, qualifications or tickets, and working with children clearance where relevant.

How to Apply

Applicants can save and return to the application before submitting. You must use your own email address, not one previously used by someone else applying for a Council role.

Two application methods are available: a written application or an audio file application. For the written option, prepare responses in a document if you wish, then complete the online form, attach your resume/CV and optional cover letter, review the application, and confirm submission. For the audio option, record responses in MP3 format under 50MB, enter “audio file” where needed in the form, attach your resume/CV, optional cover letter and audio file, then review and confirm submission. Some fields such as drop-downs, check boxes and reference-check details must still be completed in the form.

The closing date is 12pm (NSW time), Friday 17 July 2026. Late applications will not be accepted.

For enquiries, contact David Filipczyk, Team Leader Bush Regeneration, on 0438 237 169.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
