About the Role
Become a pivotal member of SURVICE Engineering, a leader dedicated to supporting the defense and homeland security sectors since 1981. Located in Adelphi, Maryland, this position involves advancing critical biotechnology research efforts that contribute to national defense capabilities. Candidates must be U.S. citizens with either an active security clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage microbial cultures using sterile techniques including preparing nutrient broths, agar plates, inoculation, and biohazard waste disposal.
- Handle hazardous chemicals carefully, such as corrosive, flammable, and toxic substances, maintaining strict safety protocols.
- Apply molecular biology methods including PCR, quantitative PCR, RT-PCR, DNA synthesis, purification, and gel electrophoresis.
- Manipulate genetically engineered microorganisms through electroporation, preparation of electrocompetent cells, and perform gene insertion validations.
- Utilize fluorescence-based instrumentation such as flow cytometers, fluorescence microscopes, and plate readers for sample analysis.
- Conduct enzymatic and molecular assays for kinetic or endpoint measurements.
- Develop and optimize protocols combining microbes with materials or chemicals to enable functionalization, fixation, or immobilization.
- Maintain accurate records and comply with data handling and distribution policies.
- Prepare and present technical documentation and presentations in government-approved formats, interacting with various stakeholders including government staff, academia, and industry.
- Attend virtual and in-person programmatic and technical meetings as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related field with at least two years of pertinent research experience; exceptional candidates with less experience may be considered.
- Proven background in both fundamental and applied research involving microbial genetics and behavior.
- Experience in designing, constructing, and evaluating functional genetic circuits.
- Strong documentation skills covering experimental procedures, methods, and findings.
Compensation and Benefits
Annual salary ranges between $110,000 and $130,000 based on experience and education. Employment includes comprehensive benefits such as health insurance, paid leave, 401(k) plan, flexible spending accounts, and tuition reimbursement. Position requires minimal travel (approximately 5%).
