Role overview
University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Clinical Fellow in Bariatric Surgery for a fixed-term appointment of 12 months. The post is based within the Bariatric Unit at UCLH, a designated bariatric centre that has been delivering high-volume, high-quality advanced laparoscopic bariatric surgery since 2007.
Training focus
This fellowship is aimed at a senior Upper GI/Surgical trainee, or a surgeon who is peri- or post-CCT, with established documented advanced laparoscopic ability and a strong interest in bariatric surgery. It is structured as a training opportunity to help develop focused bariatric skills and competencies, and is accredited through the Royal College of Surgeons under the National Fellowship Scheme.
Clinical scope
The unit routinely performs Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, one-anastomosis gastric bypass, and complex revisional procedures.
Key duties
The fellow will support the full pathway of care for bariatric patients before, during, and after surgery. The role also includes data gathering, audit work, and preparing patients for multidisciplinary team discussion. Most bariatric theatre lists and outpatient clinics are expected to be attended, while working alongside two other non-consultant surgeons to maintain cross-cover and uninterrupted service. Specific sessions will be allocated, and the post does not involve competition for training opportunities.
Provisional timetable
The indicative weekly schedule is as follows:
- Monday AM: 7:30am theatre; PM: theatre until 18:30
- Tuesday AM: non-working; PM: theatre until 18:30
- Wednesday AM: 9am bariatric outpatients supervised; PM: 1pm–5pm MDT preparation
- Thursday AM: 7:30am theatre; PM: team meeting and MDT
- Friday AM: 9am/7:30am theatre alternating with bariatric outpatients; PM: administration until 5pm and theatre alternation with bariatric outpatients, then until 18:30
