Job description
About the Role
The Platform team at Spotify develops the technological foundations that allow the company to scale operations and accelerate learning across all global markets. This team builds essential infrastructure, tooling, frameworks, and services that support Spotify's ambition to serve a billion users.
Starfleet is a key part of this evolution, delivering vital internal platforms such as Fleetshift, which automates large-scale code refactoring, and Production Policy Enforcer, which enhances security and streamlines production fleet operations. Currently, Starfleet is spearheading a major transformation by migrating Spotify’s engineering environment from multiple repositories (polyrepo) to a unified monorepo structure, fundamentally changing how thousands of engineers build, test, and deploy software daily.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the monorepo migration by developing and refining core tooling and infrastructure.
- Address challenging integration problems involving continuous integration and delivery systems, dependency management, and developer workflows.
- Maintain and improve influential internal platforms like Fleetshift and Production Policy Enforcer as legacy systems are phased out.
- Architect and develop backend systems predominantly utilizing Java, ensuring they are reliable, testable, and maintainable.
- Oversee end-to-end project delivery, from design through operation.
- Lead smaller technical projects within the team, facilitating coordination and ensuring alignment to goals.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders within the Platform Mission to ensure the monorepo approach supports all engineering needs effectively.
- Minimize developer burden by automating processes and fostering scalable self-service infrastructure.
Candidate Profile
- Proven experience creating backend systems using modern programming languages, especially Java.
- Comfort working with multiple systems and complex distributed architectures.
- Ability to independently manage scoped technical challenges from design to implementation.
- Strong commitment to improving developer experience through automation and reducing operational friction.
- Familiarity with infrastructure, DevOps practices, or cloud-native platforms such as Google Cloud Platform or Kubernetes.
- Team-oriented mindset valuing group success over individual recognition.
- Resilient and curious attitude toward problem solving, treating setbacks as learning opportunities.
- Understanding of the broader impacts of technical decisions on engineering culture and striving for scalable long-term solutions.
Work Location and Flexibility
- This position is located in Toronto, Canada.
- Employees enjoy flexible working arrangements combining remote work with occasional in-person meetings.
Compensation and Benefits
The base salary range in Canada for this role is between 103321 and 147602 CAD annually, supplemented with equity options. Benefits include extended health and dental insurance, retirement savings plans, a monthly meal allowance, 23 paid vacation days, 13 flexible paid holidays, and other benefits in compliance with Canadian employment laws. These terms may be subject to change.
Inclusion and Process
Spotify is committed to diversity and inclusion, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds. The company ensures an accessible recruitment process and invites candidates to request reasonable accommodations at any stage. Additionally, AI tools may assist in reviewing applications, but final hiring decisions are made by people. Transparency regarding data processing is available upon request.
