Job description
Role overview
This role is for an experienced Avionic Technician and Supervisor who will carry out and oversee detailed maintenance work on aircraft and aircraft components. The position calls for strong knowledge of approved technical data, the ability to direct maintenance in line with the organisation’s regulatory requirements, and responsibility for allocating work, supervising staff, and managing people. The post holder will be expected to help deliver targets at a tactical level, show leadership, understand wider operational dependencies, and contribute to ongoing improvement. Certain responsibilities may also be delegated by the Maintenance Manager.
The role also demands the ability to troubleshoot and diagnose faults on equipment and assemblies, follow diagnostic processes accurately, and work effectively as part of a diverse operational team. Guidance will need to be provided to less experienced colleagues where appropriate.
Core activity
- Carry out detailed maintenance, inspection, and supervision tasks on Typhoon aircraft or associated components, ensuring all work matches the assigned tasking or work package and approved technical instructions.
- Identify and resolve faults, maintenance issues, and configuration-related matters.
- Keep a personal logbook up to date to show current competence and recency. Once OJT tasks are completed, sign other personnel’s logbooks where this is within trade and skill limits. If designated as an assessor, complete authorisation and competency checks, and review Pt 145 licence application packs before submission.
- Perform maintenance and diagnostic work on aircraft or components, which may include ground handling, flight servicing, aircraft role changes, component removal, inspections, repairs, modifications, fault rectification, replacements, and functional or system testing.
- Lead and monitor the team so work stays on schedule, raise issues promptly, and escalate impacts that could affect the wider programme.
- Work flexibly and proactively, taking direction appropriately while meeting role responsibilities.
- Make sure staff assigned to tasks are suitably competent and authorised.
- Maintain both personal and team task authorisations for aircraft or component work in line with regulatory expectations.
- Help deliver short- to medium-term targets through effective supervision of others.
- Perform support tasks in the maintenance facility needed to remain compliant with the MOE.
- Provide leadership and day-to-day support to the team, helping develop members through formal assessment methods and communicating complex information clearly.
- Evaluate faults and raise additional work cards for issues discovered during maintenance.
- Carry out independent and critical inspections when required.
Key accountabilities
- Manage performance by setting delivery targets, tracking progress, and building improvement actions to improve efficiency. Prioritise work across teams and assess escalated issues for their effect on continuing airworthiness, resolving them or escalating them further where necessary.
- Ensure the team follows Part 145 Exposition requirements, related procedures, standards, and other relevant company standards. Recommend and implement changes while maintaining compliance.
- Promote Human Factors, Error Management, Risk Management, and Safety Assurance across the Part 145 team, including proactive hazard identification, mitigation, and control.
- Ensure all Part 145 work is properly recorded and that airworthiness documentation is maintained on the required IT or paper systems. Make sure only suitably qualified, experienced, and authorised people carry out Part 145 tasks. Support business integration and stakeholder involvement throughout the process.
- Support management system assurance by participating in process confirmations and independent audits, responding to findings promptly, and helping implement corrective improvements.
- Apply the relevant continuing airworthiness regulations and support any regulatory changes affecting maintenance work. Maintain compliance with other obligations such as ITAR, EaPW, and ISO.
- Meet all contractual requirements applicable to the role.
Requirements
- Completed an engineering apprenticeship, preferably in aeronautical engineering, or an equivalent military apprenticeship/qualification.
- Minimum academic requirement of City & Guilds 2675 or 2661 in Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance, or an equivalent qualification.
- Aircraft platform training is required.
- At least 2 years of experience working at supervisor level before taking up this post.
- Training in on-the-job instruction methods.
- Strong practical and theoretical knowledge within the relevant technical area, with an understanding of how the team works with others and how continuous improvement is applied.
- Typhoon Avionic Trade Q Course, or an equivalent qualification.
- Must follow personal risk assessments, SHE policies, and related procedures.
- Human Factors standard course completed.
- E&PW awareness standard course completed.
- ITAR awareness standard course completed.
- Comfortable using IT systems.
- Valid UK driving licence.
