Job description
About the company
Engine by Starling is Starling’s software-as-a-service platform, built from the ground up to support the bank’s own operations and now offered to banks and financial institutions worldwide. The business helps financial organisations accelerate growth using modern digital capabilities and efficient back-office processes, drawing on deep banking knowledge and strong technical expertise.
Working style
This position follows a hybrid model. The team prefers people to be within a reasonable commuting distance of one of the offices so that in-person collaboration and teamwork are possible.
About the role
This is not a narrow, fixed-domain product role. It is designed as a starting point for a broad product career, beginning in Core Banking. You will first build a strong understanding of the fundamentals of banking, including ledgers and accounting, and then, as the business grows, be expected to shift into other areas such as payments, savings, and lending depending on business priorities.
The ideal person will be comfortable with a role that has a clear starting point but an evolving destination. If you enjoy learning quickly, adapting to change, and exploring how a modern bank works from the inside, this could be a strong fit.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience in product, engineering, data, business analysis, or another highly analytical role, preferably in a fast-moving environment.
- Strong enthusiasm for learning, listening, and growing in a rapidly expanding organisation.
- Helpful prior exposure to FinTech, or at least a solid understanding of banking, lending, or other regulated financial environments.
- A technical background, technical experience, or genuine curiosity about how technology works.
- A flexible mindset that suits a role starting in Core Banking and later moving across areas such as payments, savings, or lending.
- Proven ability to organise your own work, meet deadlines, and complete well-defined tasks with some guidance.
- A relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification; a foundation in Maths or STEM subjects is considered an advantage.
Responsibilities
- Start in the Core Banking domain and build deep knowledge of ledgers and accounting processes.
- Adapt to support other product areas, including payments, savings, and lending, as business needs change.
- Work through ambiguity and shifting priorities while staying effective in a flat, fast-moving team.
- Write clear user stories, requirements, and tickets with precise acceptance criteria.
- Partner with engineers and designers to explain the purpose, approach, and rationale behind the product backlog.
- Use product analytics and feedback to evaluate feature usage and make practical trade-offs.
- Raise blockers early and communicate progress, risks, and dependencies to your manager and stakeholders.
- Act on feedback, take notes, and show improvement through visible behavioural changes.
