Job description

Role overview

Queensland Police Service is seeking an Assistant Watchhouse Officer to work at Gympie Police Station, providing front-line support in the supervision and control of people held in custody. The role focuses on basic security, administrative support, and logistical assistance within the watchhouse environment.

The Queensland Police Service manages detention locations across the state for people in police custody who have been refused bail, are awaiting a court appearance, or are remanded or sentenced, until transfer to a youth detention centre or correctional facility.

Key duties

  • Carry out watchhouse tasks related to the administration, supervision, and monitoring of people in custody as well as visitors.
  • Compile, update, and manage prisoner files and associated records.
  • Use electronic surveillance and movement control systems in line with approved procedures.
  • Keep watchhouse records accurate and compliant with Queensland Police Service policy and procedure.
  • Support the intake and processing of people taken into custody according to QPS requirements.
  • Oversee prisoner welfare, comfort, and safety throughout their custody.
  • Record prisoner health needs, watch for medical concerns, and arrange suitable medical assistance when necessary.
  • Provide support to senior staff on matters affecting the overall running of the watchhouse.

Mandatory requirements

Applicants must hold an Open C class driver licence.

Work conditions

This position requires the wearing of an Assistant Watchhouse Officer uniform and compliance with the Queensland Police Service Code of Dress and Appearance. The role is rostered on shift work and operates on a 24-hour, 7-day schedule.
